Solution: Turn off machine. Turn stitch dial until you hear click on each stitch shown on dial. Set to straight stitch then and set stitch width to 6. try machine again being careful to put light force on the foot pedal so your not going full throttle. This is how I "de-confused" my Singer Heavy Duty 4423 when it got stuck on reverse. Hope this helps!

Another possibility is that you may have previously made buttonholes and forgot to change setting so now machine is on reverse for completing a buttonhole revolution. If you think this is cause, make adjustment by getting machine back to "normal" setting. Make sure feed dogs are UP (flip switch left side, back of machine).
