Started happening a couple weeks ago if the lid was lifted during the cycle at any point, cycle would stop. Now I can't get it to anything but fill with water.

SOURCE: My Whirlpool washer won't agitate or spin . But it does drain the water.
i also had the same problem, and it ended up being the coupler. It was not hard to replace, it cost me about 19.00. I didn't follow full recomende instructions. I tipped the washer backwards. Removed the drain pump and the motor itself. Then I removed the old coupling and placed the new one. The washer is working like new...

if you lift andclose the lid do you hear "clicking" noise??? i bet not. simple repair, lift the lid and with a hollow shafted screwdriver(1/4in nutdriver or similliar hollow shaft implement)you fell with your hand the bottom half of the left side lid hinge. as you open and close the lid you can fell the opposing end of hinge under the top no need to dissasemble you can fell it right there. when you find it simply slip the hollow ended shaft over the hinge and apply pressure towardds the rear of unit. While doing this the top will want to close( your pushing against the hinge).. after appling slight pressure youll bend it slightly, enough to activet the lid switch mounted to the rear of the main lid assy.

Many Whirlpool built 'direct drive' washers use a 2 piece agitator. There are cogs called 'dogs' or 'dog ears' and a cam between the two halves of the agitator which can wear leading to a clicking/ticking sound and reduced movement of the top agitator section during the wash cycle leading to poor cleaning results. In most cases these worn parts can be replaced without much cost or difficulty. If you have this style of washer this should help.

Curdy, it almost sounds like your lid switch is loose or fractured and the lid actuator is not making the switch. Check this out first and post back...Catriver.
