I recently bought one with the same issue. it has nothing to do with a turntable belt as the list of useless suggestions state below. you must remove the lid (when open, it should slide out by lifting directly upward), then you remove the rubber mat and metal plate. there you will see a plastic cover held on by 5 or 6 small screws...remove those and the cover. this cover exposes the opening that your tone arm will have to be above to remove the entire plastic shell that houses the entire inner workings. So, with the power ON...use the << button to move the tone arm over the opening (you may want to give a gentle push to the mechanism to guide it along). Once it's over the opening, you can begin to remove the entire cover. there are three screws on the top side of the unit (way down in three holes that were under the platter), then there are a number of screws on the bottom of the unit around the outter edge and one near the center. With those screws taken out, the cover should be able to be removed. Inside the unit, on the left (all the way to the back) is your small motor that spins a small black belt that turns the gears that pull the tiny steel cable attached to your tone arm assembly. On my turntable, this belt had sat so long that it had conformed into an oblong shape and wouldn't spin properly around the two wheels/pulleys. Make sure that you still have a belt there. If not, search the global interweb for one...$5-15 maybe?! I was able to remove my belt, cleaned it up a bit with soap and water (made it slightly pliable and tacky enough not to spin on the pulley/wheels), then put it back on AND........it works now. Hope this helps?!?!

Concerning the Realistic Lab-2100,an excellent explanation on how to remove the plastic shell by Cory Gleasor which I have followed to the last screw! Trouble is the tone arm on my deck refuses to move at all power on,off or otherwise.Which means I am unable to remove the shell as the tone arm won't move to the opening! Does anyone have any ideas please.Thanks.

I have had one of these turnables since the mid 80's as cory greaser said you have to remove the cover to gain access to the innards. The tone arm is mounted on a buggy that runs on two rails the grease on this buggy degrades over time and becomes very sticky. You need to clean all the old grease from the rails & the bottom of the buggy. Then renew with a non-sticky silicone grease.

SOURCE: Sony PS-LX500 Linear tracking turntable

I think it's kind of cheap to ask someone to pay $10 for an answer to one question. Sheesh!
I haven't gotten the answer yet, but a local stereo store pointed me in the right direction. Thanks anyway.

Tom

SOURCE: Turntable will not turn (spin)

It would appear this is a belt drive turntable - here's a link to a site where you can order a replacement, although you may be able to find a cheaper one.

Linear tracking tonearms probably don't move much under manual control. It would still help if we knew the model number.

SOURCE: how do I replace the belt on my Realistic LAB-1500

Hi,
Getting Started

  1. Remove the rubber platter mat if your turntable uses one. Set it aside.
  2. Lift the platter straight up and off the center spindle to expose the turntable belt.
  3. Remove the original belt and check it for wear. Generally, a turntable belt doesn't slip unless it's damaged. If it is damaged, purchase a new one.
For a Two-Piece Platter Turntable
  1. Loop the replacement turntable belt around the cylinder located underneath the platter.
  2. Check that the belt is working properly by turning the platter clockwise two or three rotations. It should smoothly move along the motor pulley. If it doesn't, adjust it and turn it again.
  3. Replace the platter, and then carefully lay the rubber platter mat over it.
  4. Turn on the turntable and check it for correct movement. If it looks like it's working, play a record to make sure all is in order.
For a One-Piece Platter Turntable
  1. Loop the replacement belt around the cylinder located underneath the platter.
  2. Replace the platter carefully. One-piece platter turntables are delicate, and if you force the platter down or push it at an angle, you might damage the platter or spindle.
  3. Turn the platter so the hole in it lines up with the motor pulley.
  4. Pull the turntable belt and loop it over the motor pulley. Position it on the pulley groove to make sure it won't slip.
  5. Rotate the platter clockwise to make sure the belt is firmly in the pulley grove. Moving it two or three times ensures that it's in place.
  6. Put the rubber turntable mat back on the platter.
  7. Turn on the turntable. Play a record if it looks like everything is working to check the speed.

It seems like you need to adjust the pitch control. Try looking at the platter strobe light and seeing if it is at the correct speed. If not adjust the pitch control until you can see the dots align. As for the not returning, your automatic motor may be busted.
