There are 2 usb ports on my case that don't pick up any device plugged into them, thinking that it must be the ports on the case i replaced the case but still have the problem . The back usb ports are fine. Thiking that i might have wired them incorrectly i took it to the local pc shop but the wires were all correct. I am running Windows XP service pack 3 but the problem was around before with service pack 2. My local pc shop has suggested a clean install because coupled with the usb problem i am also unable to delete unwanted programs leading them to believe that there may be a virus at work. Would a virus cause my usb problem?
will search for usb software. not sure what the mobo is but i know it's an intel celeron socket 478 cpu with DDR400 ram (768Mb) .any further advice would be great.

windows Xp ?? if so, please install windows xp ps3
that should fix the probem.
USB Controller 2442 and 2444 should be listed in the control panel>system>hardware>device manger. it is at the button of the list.what Operating system do you have??/

try the usb at the back of the pc. if it works with the usb port at the back. Then, I would assume the port in the front is defective.
there is nothing else, except try to get a replacement for the front ports.
try ebay. someone might have one.

I've never seen 2 front USB ports that were bad. I've seen 1 that was defective because the USB device that was plugged into it was broken off. However in that case it caused the power supply to short out and prevent the computer from powering on. Here is a link to your model: ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_optiplex_desktop/optiplex-760_Service%20Manual_en-us.pdf If the USB ports on the back of your computer work then the front ones should too unless there is a connector dislodged to motherboard. All USB ports use the same circuit.
A computer has USB ports on the back and on the front of most modern units. USB is what is called "usb hot swap". The pc can be on when the USB devices are plugged in or unplugged and the OS should recognize it. So if the pc hangs up there may be something else wrong.
1. Try unplugging all USB devices, boot the pc without any plugged in. Choose one device and plug it into each port. Wait until the OS recognizes the device. You will see a box come up with different options, one is at the bottom that allows you to open explorer. You can pick it or just hit the escape key to void the selection. (You do not need to reboot to try the rest of the USB Ports) Do this to all USB ports, both front and back. I know this will take time but you need to eliminate all the USB ports to make sure they are not the problem. Once you know that the USB ports are all good then the next step is
2. Now take each device and plug one at a time into any of the ports. I would use one on the front of the pc, makes it easier. Again let the OS see that it is there and prompt you for action.
3. If all your devices work after this testing, then plug everything back in and reboot the pc.
4. Have you made any changes in the BIOS? May be reset the BIOS lately?
This may sound like strange question but have you installed the OS to the USB device? Some Devices/OS's/PC's allow booting from USB devices. If the computer is trying to boot from USB it will cause terrible slow down in perfromance, check your "Boot Priority" Settings in the BIOS? The boot priority should list the HD Drive as the first boot drive.
Good luck and please post back that you are successful, giving thumbs up, or that I can be more help.
I had a similar problem on a different case though. They might have similar causes.
The front usb port circuit board was connected to the MB with a ribbon cable. The prior owner had the cable attached backwards. It worked fine, until you plugged in a USB device, instant crash.
Can't say for certain this is what is happening with you, but it is a possibility.
I'm sure you already know, pin 1 is the striped cable. On the board pin 1 has an arrow.
1) Power down or reboot your system.
2) As the pc is restarting, press the F2 button to pull up the "Setup" screen.
3) Right Arrow to the "Advance" tab
4) Make sure that all devices are enabled
5) Arrow down to "Miscellaneous Devices"
6) Make sure "External USB Ports" is also enabled
If these are case front/top or other panel ports, verify that the ports are connected correctly.
if ports are configured correctly, remove all usb drivers via device manager. then reinstall them. if the problem still occurs you either have corrupt usb drivers (probably not since 2 ports work) or the USB ports were damaged in installation or because of usage.
sometimes the ports will not clear their settings, try the object you are plugging into the 2 non-workign ones to another port hen try something you never plugged into the 2 non-working. if you still get an error, its a driver or damage issues
If you are using the front USB ports, some motherboards and/or cases do not support 2.0. Try and plug the device into the back to see if it resolves your issue.
If you are using the USB ports on the back side of your computer, and still experiencing your issues; go to your PC or motherboard manufactuar's website and make sure you have the updated chipset driver.
I see many comp. with problem on front usb port. In some case USB port isn´t right plug in motherboard, or is everything OK but they don´t recognize USB stick.
Only one, don´t lose you time with that, don´t use that USB port.
You need the motherboard specs, which you can look up on the internet, based on the maker.
With the USB ports, the front ones often don't include power.
So plug a powered 4 port hub into the front port, and then the hub will supply the power after that.
It does sound like your ports on the front might be bad. They usually connect to a seperate port on the motherboard than the rear ones, and I have seen devices short out the front ports, such as a USB music player.
You can remove the ports on the device manager, and they should come back ok, without worry. However, I doubt that is going to help the front ones. I think you have a hardware problem.
If that is the case, the easiest solution is to get a USB hub, and run a USB cable from the rear, to the front of the computer.
Is it just Memory Stick, or everything that you plug into USB?
Try following:
plug in other USB device into ports
if it does not detect any USB device on any port on your computer
if both front and back USB do not work it may be taht USB is turned off in BIOS, or USB driver is corupted
If you have front USBs and they just do not work there is wire connecting them to the motherboard since it may be loose, if connection is OK than they are dead.
