Dewalt doesn't have a DC987 chain saw. They do have a cordless drill with that model number and you can find a good parts diagram at www.ereplacementparts.com. Put the model number in the search by block and you'll get a good breakdown and a list of what parts are still available. NOTE: Shop around once you get the part number, ereplacementparts isn't always the cheapest place to get parts.
Clutch is part of the transmission assy - yes it is about the only thing that it can be causing your issue. It is a fairly inexpensive and easy fix on Makita - the worst part is removing the chuck.
could be the clutch needs replaced, but I would check to make sure the high/low switch is fully engaged. Inside the clutch there is ring gear that could have the teeth rounded off I would go to Makitatools.com and type in your model number for a breakdown so you can see what you are getting into, they are not that hard if you are mechanically inclined and just watch how you do it.
