Hi!
We have a Uniden Oceanus DSC, which we bought as an upgrade for our MC-620. It has been my experience (20 years as a broadcast engineer) that reception issues are almost ALWAYS caused by the antenna. Antenna location is the easiest to fix, VHF being line-of-sight, HIGHER is better. We have our antenna on top of the mast (40' above the surface of the water). It has been my experience as well that Uniden products are very nearly bulletproof and RARELY need servicing. I'd concentrate mainly on checking your antenna installation.
Uniden will sell you a service manual, but they are indeed SPENDY. (Over $100US) Which is JUST about what your radio costs new.
Sorry I couldn't have been the bearer of better news.
