I had a mechanic come out and work on my Laredo about 8 months ago; it was leaking fluid from the rear main seal. He didn't fix the leak and since then the gear indicator doesn't match up, and I don't have 1st or 2nd gear. The Jeep starts out in 3rd unless I put it into low manually; sorry I didn't mention it's an automatic transmission. I've replaced the governor, the governors' sensor, and the shift solenoid. The pan and filter have been dropped and changed so many times, I don't want to think about it anymore and just want my Jeep back.

I don't know how you thought he could fix that leak when the trans has to come out? Take it to a transmission shop and stop guessing, and replacing perfectly good parts. Have the trans shop replace the rear seal while the trans is out.

Leak from the rear main seal

There's only one way to fix it and that is to replace it. This requires separating the engine and transmission and lowering the oil pan. It is best left to a mechanic. hope this helps.

I have a huge oil leak in my 98 Toyota Camry It leaks roughly 1 qt of oil for each hour of driving. What would be the cost of repair?

Need to find out where leak is from. Kinda sounds like a crankshaft main seal, front or rear of engine. Front one is pretty easy to change, but rear main seal leak means you have to drop transmission to get to it. But it could be another seal or gasket. Can you tell about where leak is, from oil spills on ground where parked? Look at engine. Is oil seeming to leak from bottom end or upper engine. May need to wipe or clean it off to see where fresh oil leak develops. A mechanic may need to put it on a car lift to pinpoint the leak. Good luck.

My 1996 VW Jetta GL starting leaking fluid two days ago, and a lot was coming out. I assumed it was oil and made an appt to get it looked it. However, when checking my oil's dipstick it says it's...

first the car didn`t stooped leaking it is simply the transmission lubricant is lost all of it
if you didn`t hit a road bump or something underneath
probably it will be the oil sealing and/or universal joints .

I have a leak in the rear differential. 3 weeks ago I had the axle and wheel bearing replaced. Could they have caused the leak when they did the repair? Iw ould think they would have told me there was a...

Ok...a leak in the front diff seal could not have been caused by an axle bearing/seal replacement. However, as I stated, the fluid level should have been checked after the job was completed. Further, front (called a pinion seal) leaks do not happen all of a sudden, rather they seep fluid for quite some time before failing. (unless the outer or inner pinion bearing has failed) THAT should have been easily noticed by the tech while he was working on it.
If the differential is noisy, I would not bother having the seal replaced as noise (usually howling or grinding) indicates a gear or internal bearing problem that is very expensive to repair. If you are at that point, best to obtain a used unit, end to end, (of the proper ratio) and replace it with that.
Depending upon what kind of flange or yoke you have on the diff, the seal is replaceable and inexpensive (less than $20). but you need some mechanical ability and proper instructions to do it.If done improperly, you will destroy the gears.

I have a few questions. First, my 01 Rodeo has been leaking oil towards the back of the engine. A friend who used to work at an auto shop told me that if it's the rear main seal, that it is not worth...

First things first - your rear main seal is worth replacing if you plan on keeping your rig. (Sounds like your friend doesn't want to get roped into doing the work) Rear mains wear for all kinds of reasons - something as simple as using cheap oil. Your exhaust leak you're going to need to get under with gloves and feel pipe(s) at flanges etc... if you don't feel up to it, have a good muffler shop look at it. Lastly, you have a rear trans seal leaking which is blowing trans fluid back on driveshaft. It's another job you might have a shop do.

I have had my rear main seal replaced 3 times and it is still leaking. Could this leak be coming from somewhere else? The first mechanic assumed it was the rear main seal, and the others I informed them...

First off i would hope that there was some waranty coverage for this repair.

Is the fluid leak indeed oil (black/brown)? If so that would be the rear main. Problem could be the surface around the seal on the engine has a defect or space.

If the fluid leak is a reddish color this is transmission fluid and would be the torque convertor leaking not the rear main.

Good Luck!
