Tip & How-To about Plumbing

Drain runs slowly

Often a drain runs slowly or hardly at all taking a long time to empty out. My tip is to wait for the drain finish emptying and then pour in about three cups of household bleach, and let sit for at least 6 hours. The bleach will sit on the obstruction and beak up and dissolve most objects such as soap residue combined with hair etc. without harming your pipes.
The other plus is that in cases where the blockage becomes worse and it is necessary to snake or open the line you will not be exposed to caustic chemicals.
This is especially helpful when you have old cast pipes and fittings in which the turns did not sweep as newer pipes made now do.

How do we remove the horrible smell in our Bosch dishwasher?

First check out your model to see if it has a built in garbage disposal, if so, make sure it is not mucked up.
Run hot water down your sink drain while running the sinks garbage disposal. Pour baking soda down your sink garbage disposal followed by white vinegar. Let it sit and foam. Run hot water down sink disposer while running. When finished:
Run empty dishwasher with no soap, let dishwasher fill with hot water to wash and then pour 1 cup of white vinegar into the bottom and resume wash. Make sure you take it through the dry cycle. When finished, open dishwasher and let it air for a couple of hours, longer if you live in humid area. Hope these steps do the trick.

HOW DO I DRAIN POWER STERING FLUID

Use a turkey baster, or similar suction tool to empty the reservoir of fluid. And, or take off the PS return line into the reservoir, and drain it into a container. Run the engine and turn wheels back and forth slowly to drain the lines. But most people just empty the reservoir and refill with new fluid-the little fluid remaining will just mix with the new fluid.

my dishwasher is leaving water in the bottom after finished. The dishes are not cleaning. Are the two related?

Yes more than likely you have a restriction in your pump/drain. you will need to remove the drain cover in the bottom of the dishwasher and clean it out
  • Empty the dishwasher and remove the dish racks so that you can easily locate the drain inside your dishwasher. The drain is under a drain grate, usually at the back of the dishwasher.

  • Remove the drain grate by either popping the grate out, or by unscrewing the screws holding it in place. Different types of dishwashers will have different options.

  • Use the soapy water and the toothbrush or scrub brush to clean inside the drain area and the grate.

  • Rinse the drain area with clean water. Then replace the drain grate.

  • Pour ½ cup of salt, 1 cup of baking soda and 2 cups of vinegar into the drain (in that order). The mixture will bubble. This will clean the drain and the drain hose.

  • Wait until the vinegar/baking soda mixture has stopped bubbling. Then pour 1 cup of bleach into your detergent dispenser. Replace the dish racks and run the empty dishwasher on a regular cycle. This will clean the entire machine

  • If this does not solve the issue your drain hose may be plugged or crimped and lastly your pump may be failing.
