go see your local dealer .

If the key is good then the damaged flywheel will not prevent it from running but it is a failure waiting to happen.

Check for compression by removing the spark plug and firmly hold a finger over the hole and pull the starter cord. Compression should forcibly push against your finger and make a "Pffft" sound.

If you have compression, remove air filter and spray a short burst of starter fluid down the carburetor throat and promptly start. If it runs for a few seconds and stops, then it is a fuel issue. Otherwise check for spark.

Once you get it running you should replace the flywheel.

check the blade if it isn't bolted tightly most likely that will fix they act like a flywheel

you can have a pc welded aND RE THREAded in there

Did you gap the plug?

Suggest you remove carburetor bowl and make sure it is clean.

Which engine?

That's an older Tecumseh engine. The magneto and points are underneath the flywheel.

This sounds like classic vapor lock. Heat from the engine is vaporizing the fuel in the carburetor before it gets into the cylinder. Next time it happens, try icing down the carburetor and fuel lines and see if it starts up.

The threads may have been stripped.

What you describe as slow may be starter stall. Starter stall occurs when decompression fails which is typically due to the valve lash out of spec. The Kohler Courage is an OHV engine that requires periodic valve lash adjustment.

Try removing the spark plug and then engage the starter. If it still cranks slowly then the problem.is not related to decompression.
