When is the vent open---When

When the slide bar is pushed out, it's Open. Not a very efficient way to operate the unit though. It will affect the cooling of the unit.

My goldstar window air conditioner was working

Hi, did the surge /protectors/breakers on the cord reset? If they tried to reset then cut off again, you have a short in a component. Check the breaker that supplies the units wall plug to see if it may be tripped. If it is, it will be in the mid position and turn it off hard, and right back on hard. Hopefully it will hold. Do this, if the breaker is tripped, reset it and if it trips again, go to the a/c and unplug it. Now, reset it and it will hold. If you have a part, motor, compressor, or what ever is shorted to ground, when you plug it in and turn it on it should trip the cord and maybe the breaker to. Check these things I have told you and see what happens. If the unit does start up and start to cool, it overloaded for some reason. A part getting ready to go out, drawing to many amps and tripping cord or breaker. You will need to try and service some of it if it is coming on. Go outside and take your garden hose and give the outdoor coil a good washing. It builds up dirt and will cause high head pressures in the unit which in turn will cause it to overload and shut off everything. Clean it well. Inside, make sure the filter is clean behind the cover on the front and the evaporator coil is also clean. Dirt is a killer of these units and should be serviced at least once a year before it gets hot out side. So, do these things, leave the cord unplugged when washing out side, and we can go from there. If it starts to work good after you clean and service it, that was your problem, but keep me posted on this. I need to no the out come. We can take other steps if needed. Please be kind when you rate me for my help, if you feel I was of help. I will be here to help you more if needed.
Sincerely,

F1, F2, and F3 are the strength of the fan blowing the air conditioner. F1 circulates the least amount of air, F3 the most. I generally find that if the air conditioner isn't getting the job done on F1, F2 will do it. I typically only use F3 if I just want to circulate air fast in my place for awhile. As far as what is "better" with closed vent or open, that depends on what you want to do. If you are using air conditioning on a hot day, then vent closed is better because it will cool only air circulating in your place. Vent open will allow fresh air in from outside, and if it's a really hot day, the air conditioner might have a harder time cooling off the fresh air than the circulating air inside your place (as it's continually being cooled repeatedly by your air conditioner).

Doe's the temp reach the set point? If not then it will run until it doe's. If you set the stat warmer and the fan keeps running after compressor shuts off check to make sure it is in power saver mode. Most AC units keep more even temp when fan is left on.

Cord to plug in

On a 120 volt plug, the smaller plug is black, power. The larger side is white, neutral. The center round plug is green, ground. Make sure your ac is not 220, the plugs are in line above the neutral. On 220 both are power.

Unit spitting out a water mist

Algae builds up in the tray at the bottom of the evaporator coil. There are pills for that, and a cap of bleach will do fine, but smell for a little while. Sometimes the whole unit will have to be removed outside for a good hosing out. Sometimes I just give the coils a good spritzing, with the filter out, with windex with bleach. I'll use an old toothbrush to clean the coils, get down at the bottom where the stuff is clogged up.

F1 - F3 are the fan speeds when the air conditioner is in fan only mode.

The vent can be opened or closed based on your preference. When the air conditioner is in a/c or dehumidifier mode having the vent closed will cause the a/c unit to recirculate the room air and cool / dehumidify quicker. When you open the vent the a/c unit takes air from outside and cools / dehumidifies it. It is obviously not as efficient this way but it does bring in fresh air.
