Optical drive working before, then after few months it's not there
First you have to go to system setup (BIOS) to see whether it is detected there under peripheral devices, if it is, then the case is easier.
Then when the system boots, just right click on my computer, then properties, then select the hardwares tab, then click on device manager.
When you get to device manager page, try and locate DVD/CDrom Drives, then click on it, if your drive is there, then just right-click on it, and select uninstall, and after this, on that same page, click on 'Actions', and select "Scan for hardware changes". But if its not there. Just click on the "Actions, and Then select "Scan for hardware changes".
Now, If it is not detected in your BIOS, Eject your CDRom drive tray, and shutdown your PC Completely, while its still ejected. Then when you power on your PC Back, Close the tray back first, and allow the system to boot.
This would enable the Drive to be detected as if its just being attached in the BIOS.
Hope this helps you out.
Goodluck!
