DVC tape doors not closing: The 'Big-Bang' theory of whacking the H__ out of the camcorder does often work, as I've done it myself. However, there is also the risk of dislodging or mis-aligning other transport mechanisms. Rather trying shaking the unit, less of a shock to the innards. Also, the gearing & motor lube may have dried out over the years, causing drag. You can hold the door shut, allowing the motor to complete its task, or use a cotton ear-bud "Q-tip" sprayed with a light-weight lube, touched sparingly on gears.

Get the video head cleaned for starters. Not an expensive job

Try removing the battery for a few seconds, and then re-inserting. This seems to reset something on my DCR-TRV20, and it starts closing properly.

HERE'S WHAT WORKED FOR ME PER SONY TECHS:
Take?»¿ OUT the battery or disconnect the AC cord.
Turn the camera ON (tape, memory, edit settings) for 15 seconds.
Turn camera to off setting.
Plug battery or AC cord back in.
VOILA!
Worked for me and I had the stupid C32:11 error code for weeks! Door would not close. Followed the SIMPLE and SAFE instructions and IT WORKED! Just like magic. I couldn't believe it! Save your money TRY THIS!

The problem is most likely a defective rotary mode switch in the cameras tape mechanism. This can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

Tape mechanism problems can be quite complicated. This will require disassembling the camera to repair the tape mechanism and can be done fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

The spring inside may not be sensitive. Try not to break open as you do not want to break teh mechanical arm and try to push the tray gently in the "spring". The tape will come out eventually

A capacitor is not holding its charge so a repair must be done. The part in inexpensive but labor will be high enough so I would invest in a new recorder if this has many hours on it

see the contacts on the both side are they rusty current is not passing thru the terminal properly try cleaning them with some rust removing liquid on a cloth and then try it

i think it needs a cleaner

If it were worth repairing, as a Sony agent, I would replace all of the capacitors and clean up the board then reset the mechanism and test. Probably too old being 2001 vintage.

The best thing you can do now is to take it to a specialist and get them to do the repairs. Camcorders have a lot of electronics in them and can be easily damaged if your a not an experienced repairer. You might also have to consider that this camcorder might not be repairable.

The record / playback heads probably need cleaning, using a compatible cleaning tape. Failing that, it is either damaged or broken.
