Constant shutter "clicking" with no pictures taken

Bad SD memory card maybe?
Try to format a new 1GB or 2 GB SD card. You may be using a 16GB SDHC.

You may also have the "self-timer" set...
Switch that to "continuous" (That's where I have it). Use the button on the right and then the UP arrow and see if you have it on self-timer. If you can't tell, then just change it until you can tell that it is set to either one frame or multiple frames and not on the circle that is supposed to look like a clock. .. and press [OK].

One of these should correct the issue. Let us know!

After changing batteries the shutter activates on any setting

Four possibilities:
(seriously)
1. No SD memory card in camera or not seated.
2. Using a 16GB (or larger) SDHC memory card - not supported
3. SD memory lock switch is on (on the memory card itself)
4. You may be "sliding" the shutter switch, which takes a picture but does not save it. This is used for testing your exposure. You must press the shutter button straight down (I know this sounds silly, but I had to post this for anyone else that may have a similar issue).

Hope this helps!

Which button or switch are you using to take a picture?

Camera wont turn on

Your problem may be battery related. Make sure that you have the correct battery type installed, and that the batteries are fresh/fully charged. If the problem persists, you may have corrosion on the battery contacts inside that camera that is preventing full battery power from flowing to the camera. Remove the batteries and wipe the inside camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sand paper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and reinstall them in the camera. This cleaning solves the problem about 90% of the time, and I hope it works for you.

Camera takes pictures but display doesn't work.

Look for the little button that looks like a TV. It switches from screen to viewfinder.

The camera is saying "memory

Hi have you tried to reformat the memory card in the camera. Sometimes if you reformat it in the computer the camera does not like it. Also make sure your camera uses either an SD card or a SDHC card. Also make sure the lock on the side of memory card is off. Lastly get a rubber and try cleaning terminals where memory card meets the camera do camera as well as memory card. If all this fails go to website and look for any updates, you may be able to update firmware. Hope one of these work. Best Regards ALex

My pentax k100d has a memory card error

Trun the camera off and remove the batteries. Leave it for at least a minute before inserting the batteries. Put the car in and turn the camera on.

The firmware in these cameras can get confused. Removing the batteries for a minuite or two will allow the camera circuits to discharge and so it will reset from start when powered-up again.

If this does not work then the camera may need to be sent away for repair. This need not be expensive it could be as simple as re-programming the camera. (Their program memory is writeable and so it can be accidentally altered under certian circunstsances. It may be possible to do this yourself using the downloadable firmware upgrade, but I would let someone else try thet first!)

However, it is just possible that the new card is also faulty!

Check the cards in your PC by obtaining a SD card reader to allow you to plug it directly into your PC.

For reference I would always recommend inserting and removing memory cards with the camera turned off. I would also use the SD card reader to load the images into the PC. Unplugging devices form the USB port can be harmful to some devices. Check the bottom right of your PC screen for an 'safe unplug' icon when things are plugged in.

Indoor picture too dark with flash

Hey Jewdeit,
The built in flash on the K100D has guide # of 52 at iso 200 which does fine for close-up photography and as fill flash outdoors, but is not a powerful enough flash for shooting far away subjects indoors. What you probably should do is purchase an external shoe mounted flash such as the AF540FGZ which has a much higher guide number of 148 at iso 100. When shooting with flash if you are using aperture priority or full manual you can also try opening the aperture to let in more light that the flash put out, but doing this might over expose anything in the foreground.

Sincerely,
Allan

Camera locked

Put in new batteries. If you're using rechargeable batteries, they already have a lower voltage than regular batteries. If you don't have enough milliamps in the battery, it will show as low, no matter what the voltage is.

Pentax K100D

There is no online diagram you can reference. I would not recommend attampting to open the camera yourself.

If you insist on attempting this, I advise first removing the batteries and leaving it of 24 hours at least. There is no knowing where the high voltage components for the flash unit are, and they will give you a nast electric shock if touched, and if they are accidentelly shorted to any other part of the electronics will destroy the circuitry.

I woud leave this to a photo repair specialist. Preferably your nearest Pentax authorised dealer.

Memory Card reads full when empty ? Pentax kd 200

Ok, first you mak have a fake card. The capacity of the card is coded into the card and fake cards often lie about their capacity.

If you know the card is not fake, then reformatting the card should clear it. You can do this in the camera. (Check the manual for instructions.) Or if you have an SD card reader that plugs into the USB port of your PC, you can download a SD card formatter for free. (The official SD card standard site has these.)

LCD screen flashing

Hi!
This is a feature and not a defect of the K100D. You can turn this off by going to the menu and going into the second tab (playback menu). Once there, go to preview display, where you will have 3 options - off, histogram and brighten areas. Set this to off (your camera is set to brighten areas, that is why the white parts of your photos appear to be blinking).
Hope this helps!

Count down on memory card

Hi!
The K100D's lcd read-out is limited to displaying 999 as its maximum. This means that the card is capable of storing 999+ pictures. Once it gets to a point that the card can only store 999 pictures or less, then it will begin to count down.
Hope this helps!

Shutter button will not work

First see that autofocus is swiched on ( side of the camera ) camera will not auto focus if body set to manual focus. Otherwise check lens which may be faulty( use another lens to check ). If you are still getting no joy camera should go in but this sort of problem is not expensive to repair.

Autofocus

I remember reading a review of the K100D that mentioned that it had poor low light performance. I know mine has a really hard time focusing in low light situations. It does the sweeping back and forth & most of the time never ends up taking a picture. (Even when it bursts the flash to try to focus.)

I've just started experimenting by using a flash light aimed at the subject I want to focus in low light situations, and the camera seems to be able to focus & take a shot more reliably.

If this works, I'm going to rig up something to hold the flash light underneath the camera so that I can use it more often.

I will post an update if this works!

Take Care & Happy Imaging!
Glen
