Well if you have bought the right battery and the proper charger this sounds very odd, did the amp hr and every say the same details on the battery & charger as the old one? when you charge the camera how long was it till you used the camera? as Sony cameras lose around 30% charge per week, I know because I have a Sony still camera and movie, both lose charge, my still camera goes flat in 3 weeks after a full charge with no use at all, so they are never good bits of equipment with batterys.

You should either download video to a computer (using firewire/IEE1394 connexion), then use a video editing software to build DVD films, or a direct firewire to DVD software (no editing, just dump the video on a disk). This is a bit difficult if you are not accustomed with computers, and takes some time if you want to have nice results. An over possibility is with new home DVD recorder / player, much have now a firewire/IEE1394 input that lets you download atomaicaly from your camcorder to a DVD or the internal Hard drive if the player is equiped with. This last seems to be the best for you if you just want to save your video for further visionning, and don't want to du "cut and paste job" that would be made possible with video editing soft on a computer. Then you should look for a home DVD recorder, and be sure to have it with a IEE1394-Firewire input. I hope this will help.

make sure that you are using the correct firewire plugs (4 pin on the camera and 4 or 6 pin on the computer depending on the computer). If you are sure you have all this correct, check your BIOS settings for a disabled media card or 1394 controller.

Take to a decent camera shop, they probably won't charge fr pulling it out, if it can be done w/o disassembly. They could also give you a better idea on the problem at hand, and you'll be able to make a more informed decision. It could be something small stuck in the teeth of the gears and jamming it. If it were worth repairing, as a Sony agent, I would replace all of the capacitors and clean up the board then reset the mechanism and test. Probably too old being 2001 vintage.

The best thing you can do now is to take it to a specialist and get them to do the repairs. Camcorders have a lot of electronics in them and can be easily damaged if your a not an experienced repairer. You might also have to consider that this camcorder might not be repairable.

The record / playback heads probably need cleaning, using a compatible cleaning tape. Failing that, it is either damaged or broken.

TRV260 nail-polish head attack: eek. Acetone is a powerful solvent capable of dissolving plastic parts, plastic gears, housing and insulation. Besides that, it leaves a residue of microscopic crystals which have probably contaminated the highly-polished metal head drum. Not to mention gumming up the bushes and bearings. With your next camera, rather use a head-cleaner DV-tape.
