Re: Canon Digital Video Camcorder ZR70 MC DC 7.4V

hello, As your camera only has analogue outputs, you will need to buy a video capture card for your PC, such as those made by Leadtek. As mentioned by Tela above, there are also external USB-connected devices that do the same job. Make sure your PC exceeds the minimum spec or you may lose information during capture. I would recommend at least 1GHz processor. Hope that helps.

This is more than likely a problem in the cameras tapr mechanism and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

All digital video equipment also has the analog video outputs (either S-video and/or composite video) found on current analog equipment. This means you can play a digital video on a regular TV, or transfer a digital video onto an analog VCR. If you record using a digital video camcorder, you can then copy the video onto VHS or Super-VHS tapes, 8mm or Hi-8 tapes, or any of the broadcast formats such as 3/4-inch or Betacam if the recording equipment has the appropriate input connectors.

I suggest check in this link, the ZR740 User Manual and specifically the Editing Section.

Hope this helps.

My husband owns a Canon

Hi,

You are in a bit of an unfortunate situation here I am afraid. However, I am going to outline all the possible options you have with this below;

1. Borrow any mini-dv camcorder from a friend or relative for temporary use to transfer your tapes to computer. Once you have trnasferred the tapes onto computer you can use any dvd burning software to transfer the video onto DVD. Nero will work for this or Roxio is another possibility. 2. Take your tapes to a video duplicator in your area and have them transferred to DVD professionally (can be expensive - depending on how may tapes are involved). 3. Buy an inexpensive miniDV camcorder to play your tapes back. This is the best long-term and least expensive option if you have a lot of tapes -- and if you can't borrow a camcorder. The camcorder does not have to be a Canon ZR40 - any cheap mini-dv camcorder will do. However you must make sure that whatever camcorder you buy, the camcorder is compatible with your computers operating system. Example Windows 7 & Vista is not supported by manufacturers on many older camcorders including Canon but they will work with Windows XP. Also Important; Most of these older camcorders use firewire IEEE 1394 to transfer video to computer and not USB. Therefore your computer must be fitted with an IEEE 1394 firewire port for it to work. You need to ensure this level of compatibility before you proceed with the purchase of any camcorder including the Canon. 4. Buy a mini dv player. This is a very expensive option. Sony did make one as an example for around $1500 but even if you could get one of these this technology is regarded as obsolete. Not recommended. Hope this has fully outlined and explained your options. Please do remember to accept and leave a vote for the solution. Many thanks.

This can be caused by several problems including the transmission gear in the tape mechanism not engaging properly or a defective clutch in the take-up spool and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. The most likely cause for this is a damaged or defective flexible ribbon cable that connects the LCD to the camera body and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

This problem is caused by a loose ribbon like connector on the main PCB. When a friend of mine had this problem, I opened it up, unplugged and re-plugged all the connectors, re-assembled and turned it on. Worked like a charm for about 2 days when the problem re-appeared. So I have opened it up and put insulation tape on all the connectors and problem has not appeared ever since. Apparently this is a very common problem on canon camcorders. Some people even reported that bashing it fixed the problem!

Will not power up

A failure to power up in camera mode indicates a problem with the lens. If the zoom or focus motors will not 'home' or 'initialize', the camera will continue to try endlessly.
If you mean that there is no picture but the camera runs otherwise normally (Beep, Start/stop, lights on, menu...), this is an Imager problem. Contact Canon about a repair. Canon may cover the repair for free.
Other things can cause it but this is most common.

Can you copy your tapes to a computer?

Hello friend,
The Canon ZR40 Mini DV Camcorder has the port "Firewire" so you can copy your tapes to a computer. you will need to check your computer if it has also a firewire socket (All the new laptops have it).
You don't need any drive software, Windows has all the necessary drivers built in. You can use Windows Movie Maker for the capture, but if you want to burn your finished movies onto DVD then look at something like Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0 which is one stop shop application (Capture, edit and burn). you can download a 30 days trial and try it out and see if it's what you want before buying it.
Best Regards,
