You will still need to go to the HP website and download the drivers for that scanner.

This problem may occur if you haven't installed the software properly. Try these steps to resolve it.
Install the latest drivers from the website. To download:
1 Go to hp.com 2 Click on Support and Drives 3 Enter your product name or number, in this case just type in Officejet 8500 All-In-One 4 Hit go 5 Choose your operating system 6 Hit Next 7 Click on the link that says Driver - Product Installation Software 8 Save it to your desktop
But before Installing the Software, use the Disc that came with the printer so you can do an L3_Uninstall first.

To go for an L3_Uninstall:
1 Go to My Computer (XP), Computer (Vista and Win7) 2 Right Click on the Driver CD, The one that has the HP Logo 3 Open Util 4 Open CCC 5 Double Click on the icon that says Uninstall_L3
The Uninstall will prompt you to restart the computer once it's done. After doing so, Install the newly downloaded software.
Try scanning again.
*********Also You can always use the scanner with your Paint application. Just go to paint, Click File, and the Click FromScanner or Camera.

You can download the scanner drivers from the Compaq/HP WEB support/download page. Make sure you select your model scanner and the XP or Vista Windows version of the drivers you require and install them. Click on this link to download the drivers: -

You can use Paint or a similar program to scan in a picture/document with your scanner.
Once in Paint you can select from Open the option of From Scanner.
You can change the size to fit the page in Paint and then save it to a file which can be opened and sent to a printer.
It's very basic, of course and it doesn't give you the options to set the scanner options usually found in the HP Toolbox.

This is something you need to talk to Hp about. Hp which maked your old scanner is the only one who would need to rewrite a software package that will work in the new win 7 operating system.

I do have a solution to your issue without calling on HP to help you:

Dual boot your harddrive: One side Win 7 and the other Win xp. Use your Hp scanjet and it's toolbox software in win xp and now you will never have compatiblitity issues with your unit again.

If it's a vertical line from top to bottom (portrait), then one of the sensors in your scanner bar is burned out. Unfortunately, there's no fix for this, as that is a hardware problem and not a user serviceable part. If it's under warranty, exchange it for another one at the place where you bought it.
