Dell computer running windows xp will not boot. NTLDR compressed
best thing to do if you can get one is a propper install disk and then follow these instructions..
1. Start the Recovery Console. If you do not have the Recovery Console installed, start it from the Windows Xp compact disc (CD). To do this, follow these steps:
a. Insert the Windows XP CD and restart the computer. If prompted, select any options required to boot from the CD.
b. When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose the repair or recover option by pressing R.
c. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access from the recovery console.
d. When prompted, type the Administrator password.
2. At the command prompt, type "cd \" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.
3. Type "ren ntldr ntldr.old" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.
4. Type "map" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.
5. Note the drive letter assigned to the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD. It is displayed in a format similar to the following: D: \Device\CdRom0
6. Type "expand <drive>\i386\ntldr._" (without the quotation marks) (where <drive> is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD), and then press ENTER. For example:
Expand d:\i386\ntldr._ <ENTER>
Note the underscore character after the "."
The following message appears: ntldr, 1 file(s) expanded.
7. Type "exit" (without the quotation marks). The computer restarts.
8. Remove the Windows XP CD and start the computer normally.

Before boot menu problem
Lets check & see if your hard drive is still bootable before doing anything else. As soon as you turn on the PC start pressing the F8 key every 2 seconds on the keyboard. A Boot menue will come up. Choose your hard drive by moving the up or down arrow keys. than press enter. You should see other bootable devices like, Floppy (if you have one connected), CDROM & Hard drive. Still stuck with the blinking line? Every computer uses a differant F key to enter the Bios. Your's can be F1, F10 or F12. Just like the you did with the F8 key restart & try each untill you enter the Bios. It will help you a bunch if you have your manual that came with the PC. When you get into the Bios it will load at the main menue. You'll know this because you can set your time in this window. You will not be able to use your mouse just your keyboard. At the bottom of the screen is instructions on how to move around in the Bios. In this Main screen your looking for your hard drive. It should be listed somethink like IDE Primary Master and its nameed like "ST3250NV". Thats an exzample name. Your will be differant. Listed under the primary Master will be Primary Slave. Under that will be Secondary Master than Secondary Slave. One of the Secondary devices will list your CDROM. If you do not see anything listed for the Primary Master than your drive is faulty. The link below shows what is inside of your Presario 4090US.
