Whichf HP laptop? Is your PC hung up? What version of Windows? Usually you can do a CTRL-ALT-DELETE and this brings up the Task manager. If your keyboard has a proper driver loaded, it will show you the Task manager screen. Select - start task manager. then look at the list of Processes. There should be atleast 9 processes running. Sometimes a virus in your system can lock your keyboard just to irritate you.

WinXP should pick it up with no questions! USB keyboards doesn't require drivers to work on XP. Just make sure that the Windows XP is updated to Service Pack 3

it's possible that you may have your keyboard plugged into the wrong plug socket. try switching the ps2 port mouse and you keyboard port.

check HDD for corrupt bootsector. Check if any bootable cd /usb key connected to PC. Try removing all external and internal IO cards , USB sticks and try to boot with minimum configuration,.

Due to the lack of further details, I am assuming that the power connection to your sound system gets disrupted. Make sure that the power plug is properly connected to the power hub, switch is turned on and the switch does not have a problem.

Press F2 while the computer is loading
after that you will see your bios setup
go to the option boot( you can get there using arrow the arrow keys)
you will see the boot sequence configure that like this:

(if you want to boot from Hard-Disk)
1st boot device :Ide-Hdd
2nd boot device: Atapi Boot CDROM
3rd boot device:

(if you want to boot from network-PXEBOOT)
1st boot device: Intel Undi, PXE-2.0
2nd boot ddevice : Ide HD

Ok,

The problem might be the boot device configuration
in first press F2 while your BIOS is loading
When your BIOS software start to load it will ask you for a
password, press enter and wait for the BIOS to load.
When your bios finish to load go to the option called Boot
you can get there using the arrow keys.
When you find the Bios option called boot you will see a boot sequence
at the first boot device option select Ide-Hdd.
If you want to load your OS using a PXE Boot(network boot)
select Intel PXE 2.0 as your first boot device.
If you want to Load the default config of your Dot Station(wich will make you boot from the hard-drive) go to the bios setup opition called exit and select the option Load Setup Defaults.
press F10 to exit saveing the configurations you did.
