if your display is lcd maybe the backlight has gone

you have to reset the receiver, i had the same problem, works now, it's great, should be in the instruction booklet. I think it was, hold the power button while you disconnect it from the wall, not too clear but check the booklet in resetting system

We see no details about your "VHS sound" device (so we can't look at a manual, which you CAN) and how you have it connected. Presumably you're using analog RCA audio cables. THAT would work on any analog input EXCEPT Phono. Nothing complicated about analog sources. Outs to Ins.

How to Hook Up a Receiver to an HDTV

Things You'll Need:

* HD television
* HD satellite or cable receiver
* DVD player
* Stereo receiver
* AV cables
* Cable connector
* HDMI cables

Though it utilizes the most sophisticated technology on the plant, an HDTV is extremely easy to hook up to a receiver. Home entertainment systems are designed for compatibility, whether it is a cable or satellite receiver, a DVD player or a stereo sound system.

Instructions


Examine the back of your HDTV. You will see a series of input jacks for AV cables, (typically color-coded white and red for audio and yellow for video), as well as an antenna input and one or more HDMI input jacks. There will likely be a number of them, but each one should be distinguished with a label ("video," "cable" or something similar).


Attach the cable connector from the cable or satellite receiver to the antenna input on the back of the TV.


Connect the AV cables to the DVD player, VCR, stereo receiver or whichever other component you wish to connect to the television. The cables should line up by color: place the white cable in the white input jack, the red cable in the red input jack and the yellow cable in the yellow input jack. All three cables from each component need to go into the same label input jacks. Usually, they will all line up in a vertical row.


Find the HDMI output jack on your receiver or DVD player (some receivers will not have them--they are necessary to receive a high definition signal--but can still play on the TV through the cable connector or AV cables). Attach one end of an HDMI cable to the output jack of the receiver and the other end into the input jack on the HDTV.


Turn on the TV. Access the menu with your remote, and follow any instructions it gives you. Your HDTV may require a few additional steps to complete the hookup of the receiver (though not all of them will).


Access the "input" button on your TV remote. This will allow you to switch the TV signal to one of the cable connections you have just made. For example, if you attached the HDMI cable to the first of two HDMI input jacks, the TV will flash "HDMI 1" on the screen to tell you that is where it is receiving its signal.


Tips & Warnings


Not everything that can be hooked up to an HDTV is capable of playing in high definition. The signal needs to be HD as well, which means that only HD broadcasts, HD DVDs and Blu-Ray DVDs can play in full high definition (though "upgrade" DVD players will allow normal DVDs to play at an enhanced picture). You can still hook receivers up to an HDTV, and it will still play broadcasts from them as clearly as the signal permits.

That would depend a lot on the subwoofer, which you did not name. I'll assume it's a self-powered model of some sort.

A sngle RCA cable from the Subwoofer Preout wll get you started. The other end is unknown.

You'll aslo have to set up the recever to know it has a subwoofer and other parameters. Find the manual at retrevo.com.

Over time the remote can become dirty from spills or potato chip debris.... This can cause the carbon pads to be on and the remote is giving a continuous command, effectively stopping it from working. Take it apart and clean carefully with rubbing alcohol and swab sparingly....

I'm a little rusty on this unit, however it is accessed thru the remote controls "Audio" button if memory serves correct. If you still have a problem, post a comment and I will dig out the manual and help some more.

The controls I would check are speaker set-up and configuration for a multi-channel sound, be sure to enable center channel YES/NO option and trim center channel level output.

The User Manual says this is a result of the power being removed while the unit is still on. In order to reset this you need to:
1. Unplug the unit
2. Press and hold the the power key
3 While holding the power key, plug the unit back in.

This clears the units memory so you loose and settings you have set but the unit works again.

Kenwood receivers recently have a commonly known problem with its receiving IR diode within the receiver, to fix this you will have to re-solder the connection on the receiver panel within the faceplate of your kenwood receiver.

Instructions to fix it are at the following link if you are willing to open up your receiver and repair it. lots of people have reported this fix as successful so it is widely believed to be a design flaw in the VR line-up of receivers as it has occured in all the VR families so far.

i turn it on and it turns off

This is a input mode problem, such as a analog or digital source input selection, if you are using a analog source and the receiver is in the digital input selection you will not pass the signal,and vice versa,

check your speaker connections you have a short or wires touching eachother
