ok i have a sylvania tv/vcr combo, similar problem, here's how i got the directv remote (RC23 & RC32) to operate basic t.v. functions:
-First i found the code that worked for the vcr (20000 in my case).
-i programmed "AV1" to 20000, this allowed me to power the tv on/off, change the channels but not operate the volume, so...
-after plugging in the 20000 code (with the slelector switch on AV1 still):
1. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys until the
green light under the TV position flashes twice, then
release both keys.
2. Using the number keys, enter 9-9-3. (The green light
will flash twice after the 3.)
3. Press select
that allowed me to operate the t.v. volume from the remote w/ the selector switch in any position, the only thing is i have to switch to AV1 in order to power off the T.v.

It sounds like the VCR mode switch is dirty. This is located on the PCB, underneath the right hand side of the VCR mechanism. If you do not know what you are doing, I do not recommend trying to clean it yourself. You have to remove the VCR from the board, and pop the wheel off the top of the switch. Use a cotton swab with a bit of alcohol to clean it, and then put a dab of WD-40 on it. Good luck. Also, you might want to tryt to reset the VCR mechanism to the fully ejected position if it is not there already.

I would contact the TV manufacture and then see if they can send you a replacement remote. They will usually do this for the cost of the remote with shipping and handling.
