This question is too old; however, assuming someone with similar question can be informed of the same.
Most cameras (brand/model) will require an associate software for use in tether mode. For Fuji, it would be Fuji Camera Remote application - Fuji-hyper Utility software, Canon EOS - the EOS Utility etc. Without the software, your camera becomes a SD card holder when it is connected to a computer. You can't do anything with it.
(There are exceptions though - for instance, a Sony Cyber shot DSC W30/ W40 future a AV out jack that can project AV on the computer or TV)
Some
symptoms of a defective CCD
(Charge Coupled Device) include distorted images or abnormal colors, scratchy purple lines,
blank or black pictures, and/or black videos with good sound being
recorded on the camera's flash card. When a picture is taken, the CCD is struck by light
coming through the camera's lens. Each of the thousands or millions of
tiny pixels that make up the CCD convert this light into electrons. The
number of electrons, usually described as the pixel's accumulated
charge, is measured, then converted to a digital value. This last step
occurs outside the CCD, in a camera component called an
analog-to-digital converter.
In order to correct this issue, the repair facility needs to replace the CCD. This is not something you may do on your own; check this article for additional details: Bad CCDs. This, isn't a good new, but hope helps to solve it.
The Malfunction: Among
the CCDs used in the affected products listed above, it has been
confirmed that, especially under high-temperature/high-humidity
environments, the internal wiring may come undone in some places.
If
this defect occurs, the signal is not output from the CCD correctly
when in shooting mode, which results in symptoms like the following in
captured images. These symptoms can be confirmed on the LCD monitor. The
same symptoms may also occur in recorded images. * images do not appear * images appear distorted
Have you tried a different firewire cable? Sounds like you've tried different computers. I'm not sure what the cost would be but you could contact Fuji camera repair at 800-659-3854 and get an estimate.
The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the
probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.
Use
these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.
Firstly ,
try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.
Try holding the
shutter button while switching on the camera.
Look at the lens ,
and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then
try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).
Try gently
pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may
cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.
Another
way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and
then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to
not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and
down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the
camera is enough to get things going again.
Try hitting your
camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of
your hand.
Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair
center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to
replace the camera.
If it is still under warranty I would suggest
you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any
off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about
warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

CCDs are not readily available in the market outside. You will have to take the camera to a Fuji service center. Please write back if you need assistance locating your nearest service center.
I reckon that your previously installed batterries may have leaked and dribbled along the flexible PCB to the mainboard and got into that connection, which controls the power on/off. What can you do? If you have experience of this sort of repair, you could clean out this minute connection, after removing the Flexi PCB very carefully and making sure you do not break the small clip you have to flip up,.... with a solution of Bicarb and water, and also clean the end of the FPCB taking care not to over bend it as it can very easily break the track on the FPCB... letting it completely dry before re-assembly...other than that, perhaps use the camera as a book end. Always check the batteries first but if is it still giving the same fault, your camera is faulty. It should be taken to an authorized repair centre for a repair estimate. Very few digital cameras have any user-serviceable parts.

I had the same problem - called Fuji in UK, they denied all responsibility. Had a rethink, checked on the web, and then called them back with the following - Fuji USA and Canada both fix this problem under warranty S2 pro and S700 both on their recall list for failed CCD's and the S20 pro uses the same CCD so why won't they fix it? Lots of apologies and they fixed it for free!
I have four S20's great cameras when they are working. Three don't. All have the same problem blurred image then eventually no image. I have posted one today for repairs at a cost of £99.99 fuji include a new 12 months warranty on the entire camera.
Solution..send it to fuji for repair. Or bin it & change manufacturers for your next camera. Personally I love the S20 especially when useing Raw.
