I highly recommend you call a technician before you hurt yourself or cause more damage to the TV

If red will not move in some direction you have a convergence problem--most of these sets use two of the STK-392-110 convergence chips---both along with any of the protection resistors around them that are open need to be replaced and the set adjusted.

The protect resistors are usually in the 50A61 1.8 ohms and dark gray in color----You can buy a pair of the chips for less than 14 dollars plus shipping on Ebay---the resistors should all be checked--almost any electronics supplier will have those.

It depends on if you are able to do the repair yourself or have to have someone do it for you-----This set would require you getting the chassis loose and tilting if up so the bottom faces the back of the set--you will have to unplug some of the plugs to do this.

The chips are 2 1/2 inches wide and 1 1 /2 inches tall with 18 pins each---they are black in color and will have the STK-392-110 NUMBER printed on the front of them in white.

The reason they fail is because the back of each chip is metal, a white grease is applied to each when they are mounted to the two large metal heat sinks with fins to keep them cool----after several years the grease dries out and one of the chips overheats and fails.

If you think you can do this repair I can tell you what you will need and give you general instructions on how to get at the chips----

If you cannot do this repair--shop around your area as most shops charge at least 300 for this type of repair--Whoever you get to do the repair: Make sure they replace BOTH chips or you will have the same problem again in a few months.

If they say it has to go to the shop---keep looking as any good tech can do this repair in your home in about a hour---I have done hundreds of these repairs.

When you consider that the total parts cost will be under 25 dollars, if you can do this or have a friend who can do it for you---you can save the set and a lot of money.

If you get the set working---I can tell you how to get into the TECH menu to fine adjust the convergence all over the screen--in the customer menu you are usually only able to adjust in about 9 places.

Focus or convergence, the two get mixed up a lot-focus on the model listed here almost never needs adjustment at all.

Not too many--if sound is developed from the set and not a surround system the set will blank the 3 picture tubes for a few reasons:Voltages missing at the tubes (high voltage or screen voltages etc)There is a loss of vertical sweep or horizontal sweep--set will do here this to prevent an INSTANT burn mark on all 3 tubes.One thing you can try to look for is to see if the filament in each tube is lit---rather dim as 6.3 volt one---if lit the above reasons are your problem.Without a meter, a schematic etc not much more you can check.You should hear a faint whoosh sound when you power the set on--the high voltage coming up.

its a convergence problem and fixable

Tv have a problems,known as a convergence problems it is dead.Tv have R,G,B colors lines mis alignments,have colors shahows pictures or 3D pictures look alike?Yes,the tv convergence board it is dead.Convergence board must be replaced 2 STK convergence ICS and some or all of it resisters too.To fix the convergence board to fixed the tv convergence pictures problems.The shop will cost u like $300-350 for parts and labors.

This is an indication of faulty lamp.
First check the lamp connectors, pull-out, inspect the connectors and then re-insert and ensure its connection from the ballast board. If the symptoms still persist, you must replaced the lamp to back the picture again.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

• Screen looks 3D
• Colors don't line up
• One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
• Screen is bowed or warped.
• TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

You can test the transmitter by pointing it at your mobile phone camera and watch the light flash but the sensor is more difficult. All you can do is assume if the transmitter works, the receiver may be faulty.

There are three, red green and blue in a rear projection set.
They will have to be removed after the liquid filled lenses are emptied and removed.
Re fitting them is the reverse of dissassembly but then the fun starts.
Static convergeance! You will require a crosshatch generator and a service manual to allow you to set up in the correct order.
It is not a task my workshop likes doing because to get it right, takes hours and hours.

Some times this is due to focus tuning.this can be fixed by connecting the wire correctly.

the pop was the sound made by an electrolytic capacitor exploding. Yes, the tv is fixable, all depends on what other parts were damaged when the capacitor failed the big way. Worst case scenario - the entire power board will gonna have to be replaced: $350 board and labor. But on a tv this old all the other components have aged so it might be just the first one of an long line of failures.
If you have the money, just get a new, better tv, it will be cheaper in the long run.
