Heres the trick to it. You download the version you need 32 bit or 64 bit save the download.
next locate your download right click it choose properties click on the compatibility tab.
there is a choice to run it in compatibility mode check the box and select your operating system.
next you need to check the option to run as an administrator witch is at the bottom of the
compatability tab apply these options and hit ok.
finaly you will right click it and choose run as administrator wait for the installer to start and follow the promts. and you can use your printer. If your printer is hosted off another computer make sure the workgroup is the same so that windows 7 can find your printer. Search and add the printer your done get more information and help from here

Try the ink testprint feature and see if it tells you anything through that. It maybe a blocked ink head...

Download the drivers from here Hpphotosmart and install it, you'll need to select the operating system type you are using before you start downloading. The model has been selected for you. I looked at the XP options, and the driver you would likely ant is called "HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Drivers", If you have another operating system and cant determine what download you want, reply with a comment and I will be more than happy to help you!

my photosmart will not print....printed three pictures and then stop ...what do I do

turn on/off, unplug, plug in, should reset configs.

take all the paper out, put half as much back in.
check the rollers to make sure no paper or particles are stuck .

go to applications folder for your computer, dbl click printer icon for make of printer. check settings. print 'test document and clean cartridge heads', this should ensure proper printing formats.

lastly, go to web site of printer model and check site for trouble shooting if this does not work above. HP has an awesome website for trouble shooting problems

I had the same problem. I tried to install my new HP Photosmart 8550 printer onto my HP desktop, I am running on Vista 64 bit. Kept getting fatal error MSI.dot4wrp40 over and over again. Upset that my Windows installer was corrupted. I search the internet for this error and realized that this only comes up with NEW HP Printers and scanners. I went to Epson's website and downloaded a driver for one of their photo printers and downloaded the driver for the Epson Stylus Photo1400 Vista 64 bit driver, and guess what it installed I went and bought this printer and I am up and running again. Sorry HP I am jumping ship. The week before I tired to install this HP printer, I installed Print Shop Pro Publisher 23, Blackberry desktop, and Canon digital utilities which in fact all use Window Installer. All installed with no problem, and they are all working. I believe this error message has to be a conflict between HP and Microsoft's 64 bit OS only.... Google THIS ERROR and you will notice only HP comes up.

disconnect the power cable from the back pf the printer
press and hold the power button on the printer for 30 seconds
try to make a copy from the printer and if it copies in the same way

Sounds like the print heads are blocked. You should be able to perform a head clean in the printer properties within Windows. Do this a few times and the ink should gradually start to come through. If this doesn't work, it may need a service.

dis means the problem is at detecting the printer or at the printer driver loading..
hope u r using licensed and updated antivirus (i prefer avg/kaspersky)..
download, install and run microsoft KB890830..
increase the Virtual Memory- Initial: 1440 Max.:2880..
howver, USB cable..
check ur RAM..try replacing with a standby..
reinstall os..
try contacting ur system admin/vendor....
