Make sure fuel system is clean, trash in the jets makes it run rough, or start then quit.cleaner that you add to the fuel might remove some deposits but will not remove trash.start it in the dark look for fire (sparks) from the plug wires.replace wires that have too much resistance too.

Rebuiling timing gears in a 2006 sportster 1200 xlc. Need a picture or reference for gear replacement and cam position

wd4ity.jpg
The cams are numbered 1 through 4 starting at the rear going towards the front. The new oil pumps do not have to be timed like the '76 and earlier models did. Install #1 cam, install #3 and #4 cams and time them with each other then install the #2 timing it with the pinion gear, the #1 and the #3 cam.

Bike runs great. until it warms up then it backfires and spits and sputters

It sounds like a fuel problem. Next time it starts doing this, take the air filter cover and the air filter off. Leave the air filter backing plate on the engine and go for a ride. If it runs better, the carb is too rich. If it runs worse, the carb is too lean. They are usually jetted very lean from the factory to meet EPA standards.

If the bike is fuel injected, the dealer will have to change that as it's not owner servicable.

If you run it too long with the enricher on when it's cold, it will foul the spark plugs. The enricher is way rich. I usually only run the enricher long enough to get the warm enough to run while holding the throttle open or using the throttle lock. Don't run the enricher any longer than necessary. Put in a new set of plugs that try that. Big Twins are bad about the enricher fouling the plugs, Sportsters are the king of fouled plugs when using the enricher. When you purchase spark plugs, just buy the Autolite 4164 plugs. They run as well as anything out there and don't cost nearly as much.

2004 xl 1200 c.

Have you changed the pipes or air filter, if so go to the next size jet, it wont hurt. You might check the tank filter also, unscrew the petcock, see what the filter looks like!

unlikely. If u don't work on your bike the best thing u can do is take it back to whoever did the plugs and tell them to fix it.
