Needing oil i need to add oil to my 1992 harley fxrp and i dont know where to check or add at i know it has to be hot to add or check

Use hot plug so it will burn the oil trying to come out of the chamber

Your dipstick should have two marks on it. The top mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Check the oil level with the bike on the side stand. My advice is to never add oil to the oil tank when the engine is cold. As long as you can see oil on the stick, ride the bike until it reaches operating temp and then add oil only when it's below the lower mark when hot. I never "top the oil off". The reason you never add oil to the tank when cold is that if the bike is not ridden for a period of time, the oil will seep by the check valve in the oil pump. It does this because the oil tank is located higher on the frame than the engine. The oil collects in the engine cases. If you "top the oil tank off", when the engine is started and it pumps the oil from the case into the tank, the tank is now overfilled. It will blow the filler cap out and oil will go everywhere making a big mess.

If its a Harley.. To add oil into the primary the best way is to remove the derby cover. Its the Round cover on your outer primary cover. Newer models have a 5 hole pattern. Takes a T27 to remove it. Not sure what bike you have. So fill to the bottom of the diaphragm spring. Use loctite when you put cover back on. Don't over tighten. Torque to 100inlbs.

warm engine up then raise/jack up front of vehicle there is a 17mm nut/oil plug on the bottom of the aluminum oil pan that you will need to remove and drain into oil pan that can hold at least 7qt of oil. then from the top there is a round aluminum cover with a 13mm bolt near the front of the engine that will need to removed and the oil filter is inside that will need to be replaced dont forget to replace the seals on the cap and screw that come with the oil filter. then after oil is finished draining re-install drain plug with new seal lower car back on grond and then install new oil filter and seals then add oil 6qt. to start then start engine and run for 30 sec. wait 10sec. then check oil level and add as needed

to add an oil pressure gauge, you'll need to put the pressure pickup tube at the same place where the oil pressure sending unit is now.

I've seen oil pressure gauges on Big Twins but I don't recall seeing one on a Sportster. I guess I ought to warn you that installing an oil pressure gauge on a Harley engine can cause you to have a heart attack. Why? Because when the engine is idling hot, it has very little oil pressure. The oil pressure sending unit is designed to turn the oil pressure light off at four, yes I said four pounds of oil pressure. The Harley engine is a high volume low pressure system. The reason for this is because it has roller bearings on the crankpin, not shell bearings like *** bikes. So, unless you get an extremely accurate gauge, when your bike is idling on a hot summer day, your gauge will read zero.

Besides, you have the best oil pressure gauge one could ask for in that engine. They're called hydraulic tappets. If you lose oil pressure, they'll let you know very quickly. They'll rattle so loudly that you'll be forced to turn the ignition off.

overfull or your rubber cap bushing is worn if you were beating on it when it came out its probably in need of a new cap but do check the oil level hot they dont always drain completly so they wont take what the manual calls for
