I have a 1986 yamaha virago 700 that wont run properly

My bike will start fine but revs really hi and can't adjust it properly. if you hit the throttle the rpms go really hi and stay there. the bike also backfires until i disconnect either plug wire and then it smooths out. while i am running down the road on the bike sometimes it runs ok and most of the time it will backfire loose power and rev really hi. i put new spark plugs in it and that did not cure the problem. i can unplug either one of the two plug wires and it will not rev hi or backfire. is there anyone who can help me with this problem. please and thank you

did you put the plug wires on the right plugs when you changed them. Sometimes its easy to get them mixed up. Also, is you throttle shutting all the way off? Sounds like a carburetta problem. Also check the ignition timming.

2 things need to be done first start your bike get a can of wd40 after your bike is warm and running spray around the carb jointsall 4 of them if your engine changes rpms up or down you have a intake leak ether your carb joint gaskets or o-rings need replacing or your carb joints are old and need replacing. at this point wont hurt to have you carbs cleaned also
