Bike wont start, just buzzes after charge on battery
What have I broken, I have just put a 24hr charge on the battery without disconnecting the battery from the bike. Now It won't start, just buzzes. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Re: Bike wont start, just buzzes after charge on battery
Wowweee youve done it now buddy. by doing this you could have ruined your batter or potentially burnt all the wiring in your bike. so go through and check with a wire tester... call the dealer and ask them

Check your new battery if it is charged up, sounds like something is draining your battery, or your alternator is not charging properly, check your charging system
How old is the battery? You need to check if the alternator is putting out a charge, is the regulator working. A dead cell in the battery will often show a full charge state if you try to charge it. When you try to start the bike the battery is required to give a high charge to the starter. The buzzing you hear is probably the starter solenoid trying to work. I would suggest fit a new battery and if the bike starts OK check out the charging system. 14.4 volts is the normal reading across the battery with the engine running at 5K.
the battery may seem ok, but it's obviously discharging itself or not charging during riding.
Try this...charge the battery with a battery charger. disconnect the charger, and put a volt meter on the battery. Start the bike. Rev up to 2000 RPM. If the voltage is not HIGHER than it was before starting the bike, there's something wrong with the charging circuit. If it IS charging, turn the bike off, and disconnect the battery overnight. If the bike will not start the next day after reconnecting the battery, the battery needs to be replaced.
If the battery is NOT charging at 2000 RPM, the charging circuit is bad, and is likely what is draining the battery overnight.
It sounds like the battery you are using doesn't supply enough power to start the bike. Using jumper cables starts the bike because of the additional power you are supplying it. Make sure you are using the correct battery. Check to see if there is a more powerful battery available for purchase.
You have many options.
-bring it to a dealership and have them charge / test it.
-buy a charger yourself and charge it.
-buy a trickle charger and charge it yourself.
-buy a brand new battery and not worry about it for a couple years
check your charging system components from the grounds, diodes, to the stator/generator and fuses. first check the battery with a volt meter to see if it reads any voltage going back into the battery. that will tell you it is not charging. also if you want a less reliable test, try disconnecting the ground of the battery while it is running. if it stops the system is not charging.
R/R
You have a voltage drain on your bike while the key is off that is why the tender wont full charge the battery. If you have any electrical accessories such as an alarm try disconnecting them they may be draining your battery while sitting. If no accessories then you have a short somewhere in the harness causing the drain.
Sounds like a wire or plug got disconnected while changing the headlight out, the harness that connects to the clutch safety switch, the one that lets the ignition fire when cranking only when the clutch is pulled in. A safety feature so you don't dump the bike if you crank it while in gear.
Sound like the magneto is not charging the battery properly, and your bike is then running off the battery while running, sending it flat.
To test this, start the bike, then remove the battery from the bike, it should be able to run without the battery connected. Make sure the positive lead does not touch metal on the bike.
Using a multimeter, check that you have 13.8 volts at the battery while the bike is running, anything less than this and your bike is not charging the battery properly.
Ck fuses and wire connections first. If no problem seen, get bike running and disconnect the ground cable @ battery. If bike dies the problem generally is in the stator or regulator assembly not keeping battery charged. Bike will run untill the battery is too low to keep the ignition system energized and the bike will die. If it continues running w/the ground disconnected, the battery could have a dead cell which will drain the battery in a very short time whether it is running or not.
Probably a wire disconnected. Check the wiring harness for loose connections, disconnected wires, dirty connections pinched wires, broken wires. Also check and add water to the battery if needed. Check the battery connections and fuses.
