Get a factory service manual. The Clymer and Haynes manuals assume the owner has a lot of experiance. The Factory manuals are more detailed and complete.

This sounds like it is out of time. You can remove the cam cover on the left hand side of the cylinder, remove the spark plug, rotate the motor to top dead center, this is when both valves are closed and the piston is at the top. confirm now that the two dots on the cam gear line up with the each other. If not, loosen the cam gear, remove the timing chain, line up the dots and rotate the cam til the two screw holes line up, reassemble. This should take care of your problem. I hope this helps.
