you have a problem with the alternator or the rectifier, its not easy to explain test procedures to people , and i recommend taking the bike to a dealer to have it tested.
Yes it sounds like one. OK, find your abttery terminals, one is marked in black cable and the other has a red sleeve near the terminal. Follow the red cabel to a box that contain a 30A fuse, see if this is blwon, which most likely. Replace fuse and now use a trickle charger as car batteries has toooo much amperage to jump start a bike. If you have another bike battery it is fine to jump start, never try using a car battery as many damages can happen. Once battery is fully charged ( normally in 8 hours) try again for your bike to start. Cheers. If good give a return comment please.
sounds like the problem is your battery is not charging when you are riding. The most common cause is a faulty regulator / rectifier. Contact a motorcycle wreckers for these parts, or your yamaha dealer. Easy way to test is, when your bike is running, and the lights start to dim, before the bike shuts down, using a volt meter, test the voltage at the battery terminals, should be about 14V. If faulty rectifier,no charge going in to your battery, then the reading will be low, about only a few volts. If you dont have a volt meter, then any mechanic shop can do this test for you. best to have this done before buying any parts.
If battery is running down. The engine may not be charging the battery. Check charging system. If running on battery, the bike will run fine for awhile then die as the battery can no longer provide spark to the engine. If charging system is less than 13.0 volts could be a ad stator or regulator. Make sure the battery posts are clean, a bad ground can cause problems too.
It's not charging, or the battery won't hold a charge? Get a multimeter and test the generator with the bike running, should be 13.5-14.5 volts. If you get this, you need a battery, if not need to find the bad component in the charging system.
a jump box is nothing more then a battery with leads on it so where are you connecting it verses the new battery you put in the bike. that doesn't make since unless you are connecting the box right to the starter motor then it be constently running the motor untill you unhooked it. check all your fuses and examine all wire harnesses for damage, burns, or any mellting.
