SOURCE: how does a 2002 kawasaki ninja 250r act if the clutch isnt adjust
if there is no free play when pulling the lever in, the bike will most likely take off from first gear, but when you throttle it, the clutch will most likely slip. if the lever is to loose, lots of free play, you may have a hard time getting it in gear. approx 1/4 inch free play with the lever and it will work normal... unless its ready for a new clutch. hope this helps...

I had the same problem.. choke cable had to be adjusted. Check the manual, I don't have mine handy but the measurement is in there.. check it out.

The switch is the most likely source of the problem. Check it with a volt ohmmeter. Put the key in off and check the terminals. Next turn the key to the 1st position and check the terminals then on any further positions. The next time the bike self starts is when you want to re-check the switch terminals.
You know, this has all the signs of an internal short in the switch. Just tell the dealer to give you a new switch. Switch failure after 5 hours of riding is simply unacceptable.
SOURCE: need help
if its the right key, then use picks to extract the key piece, and have new one made. or find the largest red wire exiting the switch, apply power, may also be more than just this wire that needs power on some bikes.
