1983 Honda CB550 Electrical Issue

My bike wasn't listed in the possible products... but it's a 1983 CB550. And I've got an electrical issue.

Started off as left front turn signal not functioning properly, wouldn't blink and gave me the fast ''click-ity'' sound of having a burned out bulb. Now all of my running lights (headlight, instrument console, turn signal running lights, brake light running light) don't function.

Battery is new. Turn signal relay is new. Left turn signal bulb replaced and swapped with right. No change.

Runs fine. High beam turns on, brake light functions when brakes are depressed. Turn signals (except for front left) function.

Where do I start troubleshooting?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry for the delay. It's been wet here in VA.

I took it to the shop the other week. Turns out there was a peice on the back of the fuse box that had gotten fried. It was one of the pressure plates that holds the fuses in. It heated up, and destroyed the connection. Got it back about a week ago. Worked pretty well out of the shop. The left turn signal still didn't work.

I rode into work yesterday and got it up to 5k RPM. Just about that time, I saw the brake light warning indicator come on. I checked the rear running light, and sure enough it was out. I still had a lowbeam headlight. I rode home from work yesterday with no change. I took it out this morning and realized the headlight wasn't working now.

I pretty sure I know where to look to fix the symptoms. But what I'd like to know is why are the fuses not breaking if the wires are getting that hot back there? How can I solve the problem? And is the left turn signal part of the issue?

when I put either the front or rear brake on both turn signals light up and my brake light and license plate light don't work

running light on left side does not work but turn signal does, running light on right side works but not the turn signal. figure its in the wiring just don't know where to start.

Sounds like a poor ground issue, pull out the headlight and check all connections in there, your turn signals are on seperate feeds than the lights but they will probably share the same ground/earth in the headlight

My 1983 Nighthawk does not have spark while pressing the start button, but has spark after releasing and engine turns nother round. what could be the problem here?

This is a motorcycle question. Repost in motorcycles.

If it is like older electronic ignitions, it has a start and a run section. The start section can fail and the run section will still be good. Will it push start or does it have a kick start? Been a while since I had a bike.

Stalling after 15 to 30 minutes of hard riding.

There are many possibilities for this issue here is a list of things to diagnose first of all ... when we get the reason we can then talk on how to rectify...
Check valve clearances are they in spec..
do leak down test to check for leaking intake or exhaust valve this also tests the health of your piston and rings by default..
With a multi meter test the resistance readings on your stator you will need your manual or ring Honda to get the range of in spec readings on the stator resistance..
one of these tests above will definitely give you an answer and let you know what the issue is -
if all the tests above conclude that the bike is all good then the CDI or spark plug coil is the only area left.
In my experience a bike that starts, runs good then fails, is nearly always electrical (stator low on resistance) but if you do all the tests above you will get valuable information on the engine and the electrical internal health, which is always good to know !
good luck mate regards Jamie

Transmission has been rebuilt. Two weeks late gears would start to grind and has progressively gotten worse

So why are you using the car?

You will have to pull the trans again & go back thru it

It wasn't built right or some other electrical issue,
that caused it to fail wasn't addressed

2005 Honda Goldwing- Electrical issue. Bright

sounds like a wire has been added the wrong way or wires have damage, switch could be the culprit. Does the kill switch work? I would be checking all wires and the conectors for heat damage (melting). And fuses for all circuts. if low beam is used does key work to stop engine?

1974 honda cb550 will not run?

• The first thing to do with ANY engine that has sat for any longer than a couple of months is to dump ALL the fuel in the tank and carb(s). ALL OF IT !! You'll want to refill with some high priced fuel that has fuel system cleaners (Like Chevron with Techron) not becasue you need high-test fuel, but because you need the cleaners. It's ether that or disassemble the carbs and clean out jets you can't find much less see. Your choice. The carb kits alone will cost you about $50 so a tank of high-test is looking pretty good, huh?

• Now the fact that you tried to crank the engine with old fuel has fouled the sparkplugs. All of them. Go buy all new sparkplugs.
