I am the proud owner of a 2008 model Yamaha R1X sports bike, I currently live in Australia where the bike was purchased, and would like to know how to convert the speedo to mph instead of kph, as I am moving back to the UK and would like to take the bike with me.
The European ones have both and are switchable but the Australian ones are not, even though I am led to believe that they use the same ECU as a Euro one.
Do I need to change the ECU or Dash? Is it a matter of re-flashing the ECU at a dealer? Is it at all possible or should I sell the bike and purchase a UK version? (although I don't really want to do that, as I have owned the bike from new and know it's history).
If anyone could help me out, or perhaps knows who to contact to find out it would be much appreciated.
If the R1 uses the same display as the FJR then its just a case of fiddleing withthe two buttons onthe clocks till it switchs to MPH, I did this by mistake on my FJR one afternoon and it took me ages to realise I was driving like a prat at 30 kph not 30 mph. Dealer says saves yam making two differing clocks for all countries, makes sense. If not their is a KPH to MPH plug in converter available from Busters in the UK, which I used on my XVZ1300TF when I brought it back from OZ in 06

why would you wanna change something so ignificant to your bike, how many times do you actualy look at how fast your are going? The UK now also have the max,speed allowed in KM on the signs, if that's what you're worried about?
Did you already check what the price will be for shipping and assurance on the shipping to the UK? I would sell the bike...put that money with the money saved on shipping and assurance, and buy a new one in the UK. I see tow positives in doing so...you will get the 09 model and it has the switchable kph/mph.

Unfortunately the sticker idea doesn't work, as the speedo is a digital LCD readout.
The bike has to display MPH, for it to be legally licenced in the United Kingdom, and my bike being Australian, only displays KPH, which therefore is illegal and not roadworthy in the UK.
So that is my dilemma, if it is not possible then I will have to sell the bike, which is something i am not keen on doing.
if it's just a matter of mph and kph.... just learn to convert it your head as you drive... 80 k is 50 mph ... 100 k is 60 mph etc. easier then having to convert it and as you have owned it from new it would be a shame to part with it. unless there is a legal condition that it has to read kph you can even get small stickers to place on the speedometer to show the different speeds
