My virago won't start , i have fitted a new battery, the solenoid and starter are working fine, i have changed the rollers springs & pins in the starter clutch, also i have changed the no 2 idler gear . When i push the starter button the starter spins but it just seems to make a squeeling noise inside the engine . but if i put it in gear roll it back & forth the put it in neutral it will sometimes turn over and start, when it starts it runs normally, but if i put it into gear the engin will stall. Do you think this is one large problem or many smaller ones, and how could i fix them.

Check to make sure your getting gas by pulling off the hose, if no gas comes out your petcock is clogged. If this is the case blow air up into the hose, and if gas comes out now your tank has to be cleaned out.

sound like your starter gear might be missing a tooth or some other king of damage, this shouldnt be a costly repair, but I wouldnt ride too much as it is, if there is a chunk of the starter gear in the transmission, this could cause much damage and be very costly
Testimonial: "thanks for advice, unfortunately stater gears are within crankcase, which means total engine strip. Probably cheaper to get another engine!"
SOURCE: Virago 535 not starting
Sounds like:
A: The starter clutch is slipping and not letting the starter engage the crankshaft
B. The carbs need to be cleaned. If ti has sat unused for more than 30 days, the pilot jets are clogged up causing it to stall (off choke) and be sluggish on acceleration off idle.

Check the starter motor on the bench clamped in a vice ,you may have sluggish or worn brushes .
SOURCE: bike starts in neutral but
Check your kickstand switch. It will not allow the engine to run in gear when you release the clutch lever. It may be gummed up.
