I don't recall needing to remove the valve covers. The spark plug wires go from the coil into a 1" diameter insulator tube / spark plug cap. The tube protects the wire from the engine heat. Remove the tube / cap then remove the plug. The stock plug is NGK CR7E. For the tank, after cleaning, get a liquid tank liner and rust will never be an issue again.
Google “ kreem fuel tank liner “ or go to www.http://www.4secondsflat.com/Fuel_Tank_Sealer.html

Sometimes after trying to start a bike with a weak battery the starter solenoid gets damaged,or loose connections develop on the solenoid due to heat.It should be next to the battery.
DEAD BATTERY
Probably. I would remove the battery and take it to a local auto-parts store to have it load tested, or at least test it with a hydrometer after you think it is fully charged.
Test methods here.
Loose chain
Loosen the Back Nuts on the Side of the Rear Wheel, Then use a Wrench to Turn the Bolts extending out the Rear of the Bike in Clockwise to pull the Rear Wheel Back, Thus Tacking Slack out of the Chain. Do Not over Tighten as the CHain Tightens some itself with Flex when you put Weight on it. Retighten Axle Nut. Thats it.
I can start my bike
May be your bikes clutch plates are bad, try to replace the clutch plates it might work...
2000 800B. While trying to break the nut on the front sprocket, should the sprocket move with the nut?
Of course. The bolt is in the middle of the splined shaft and holds the sprocket as well. Some have a hole where you insert a rod to lock the sprocket, or you can put the bike in 1st Gear and give the breaker bar a sharp tap with a lump hammer. Or you can jam the chain somewhere back by the back sprocket, for instance putting a ratchet strap through the rear forks and the wheel, or you can get someone to apply the rear brake.
What is causing the rear wheel to lock when in gear?
well i would say it had dropped a valve on one of the cylinders, its very hard to say which one but usually if it did it at speed it will have made a bit of a mess in the head.Take each of the spark plugs out and have a look in the spark plug hole on each cylinder with.a small powerful torch and look for bent metal or metal fragments.usually on a v twin its the rear cylinder that suffers as it runs hotter but its not always the way.
