WHERE IS THE( OIL DIP STICK) ON A 1980 HONDA 500CX

I have an old bike also, no dip-stick, but theres a sight glass on the right side of the engine, down low on the side case, you should put it on the center stand first and add oil slowly until you see the oil in the sight glass, only fill it 1//4 of the way, start bike, run for 30 second- to 1 minute the turn it off and check the level when it cools down again, add more oil slowly as needed but dont fill above halfway in the sight glass.

I have a 1980 Honda CX 500 Custom and the

Honda temperature gauges tend to run high before the electric fans kick in. They also tend to read differently on different bikes of the same model (fuel gauge, temp gauge , speedometer, etc.)Your fan is driven attached directly to your cam so it spins constantly. If your machine is not actually overheating or boiling over and has plenty of anti freeze, I would just keep an eye on it and not worry about it. If your engine gets really hot it will tend to leak anti freeze down the left rear cover past the water pump seal. This is normal and should be of little concern unless the water pump develops a steady drip. Then the water pump seal is bad and will need to be replaced.

Shift lever is stuck and will not move up or down

The return spring has broken or become unhooked inside the rear cover. Unfortunately, you will have to drain the radiator, drop the motor out of the frame (you can leave the radiator on and the oil in), lay the motor gently on the radiator, remove the rear cover, and address the spring/shift actuator issue in the bottom left corner of the motor. Aligning the shift actuator gears is critical. Be sure to slide the cover on and manually check the transmission shifts up and down. Now take the cover back off carefully and install the gasket, reinstall the cover, double check the transmission shifts up and down, if all is OK bolt down the cover, and put the engine back in the frame. Believe it or not the whole job should take under four hours. Under two hours if you have previous experience dropping and installing a CX500 motor.

Do I have to have

Your motorcycle needs the fan to regulate the temperature of the engine. I would not suggest running the bike without a fan.

If both cylinders appear to fire when the pistons are at the bottom, could you possibly have the wires on the wrong cylinders?

Back wheel locked up when

Hello Dj.

Had this happen to me many years ago. The engine had actually seized and locked up the wheel.
A locked up (broken) transmission could also do this.
If the rear wheel itself isn't turning you will need to remove it.
Check the brake shoes, they may have come apart and jammed inside the brake drum.
Check the wheel bearings, one may have overheated and seized.
You will need to locate the problem first and then take it to the next step.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Battery wont charge

Before digging in to the altenator and regulator assembly, check the voltage of the battery both with the engine running and without. If it doesn't rise above 13volts then check the ac in to the regulator diode pack. If you have lots of ac it is the regulator OR A BROKEN WIRE joining the regulator to the battery. Likewise if there is no ac to the regulator rectifier block there is probably a broken wire from the altenator. Try and keep your mind outside of the problem as if you get burried in the problem, you won't see the easy solution. And I hope it is an easy solution. Safe riding.
Hope this helps.

The engine comes from japan, a daft statement but the engine was designed to run on unleaded petrol in japan and when they came to England we still ran fully leaded petrol the engine is quite happy on ether fuel the motor may be unsettled for a while but will stablise if you change over from one to the other.

Right side breaking up at 5000 rpm

Try the cheapest route first. Have you installed new spark plugs? Spark plug caps are notorious for going bad on this model. Unscrew the caps from the end of the wires and check them with an ohm meter. If they read higher or lower than 5000 ohms, replace the spark plug caps. You might also have a bad coil wire. Unfortunately, the coil and wire are sold together. You could spray some water on the right wire, when it is dark, to see if there is arcing or shorting on the wire. If so, replace the coil and wire. New Honda part if available, a good salvage part It might be just as old or as bad as the one you take off.), or Accel makes some good aftermarket coil sets with wires.

Brake lights don't work, although bulbs are good.

If a switch is bad, it will only affect that brake, not both. If the bulb is good, then i suggest it must be the fuse for the brake lights, located in the fuse box, either under the seat, or behind one of the plastic side plates.
Even though the bulb may look good, it still is worth replacing it, to eliminate that source of the problem.
