Hello spitandspat,

Here is a step by step. As always care must be taken when lifting a car, proper support is necessary.

The starter is on the side of the engine closest to the radiator.

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable and isolate it so it can't make contact with the battery connection.
2. Raise and properly support the car.
3. Disconnect the wires from the starter.
4. Remove the plastic shield from the bell housing to expose the starter bolts.
5. Remove the starter.
Note: If there are shims under the starter you will need to replace them as needed.
Note: Compare the old starter with the new starter before installing are two different starters for this application.

Installation is the reverse of the removal.

Regards,
netvan

What wires go where to starter solenoid on 98 buick regal 3.8l

the large wire is the wire that goes directly to the battery positive, the other smaller wires on this same terminal go to feed different circuits on the car, these wires are fusible link wires, on the other terminal one wire comes from the ignition switch to activate the starter solenoid to start the car.

How do i change the starter own an 1998 buick regal 3.8L i heard that it was simple but u have to remove something under the hood. i was wondering is it the same as a 1996 or 1997 buick regal.

Your 3800 Regal should not create any additional work to remove/replace the factory starter...Ask your parts store to show you one...be sure to disconnect one side of the battery prior to any work around the starter...Should be just 3 bolts (plus 2 wire conncections) for the switch out...Hope this helps.
