Have to hit starter 2 or more times before starts - have replaced ignition module, fuel pump, throttle control, idle sensor / once warmed up, starts first hit, problem when cold ????? what are we missing ?????

  • jraddke Aug 02, 2008

has nothing to do with the starter, the starter is fine, we apparently speak a different language - when I say "hit the starter", I mean you have to turn the ignition 2-3 times or more when the car is cold, once it is warm, it will start every time on the first try - I refer you to my original statement above !!!!!

  • jraddke Aug 03, 2008

we are definately not on the same channel -- am 78 years young and have been messing with autos for a long time - did not fall off the turnip truck yesterday - obviously no one knows any more than I do !!

Starter is going to be the problem disconnect the battery clean all the electrical contacts. And if you can get some electronics cleaner inside the starter sometimes it frees up the springs brushes and other contacts inside and you get a little more life out of it. But the starter is doing what its suppose to do and giving you warning it's time to change.

Bad starter? You shouldn't have to hit the starter for it to work, if there isn't anything wrong with it. Sounds like you've replaced everything except the problem.

So you meant turning the car over? Turning the key 2 times isn't the same as hitting the starter 2 times. Maybe that's why your having problems fixing it (or help for that matter), you're describing the wrong thing? My apologies you didn't know that's what you were doing, although I don't know how my response was inappropriate because you described the wrong thing...

  • Tyler Aug 03, 2008

BTW, since the starter isn't the problem, how's the fuel system? Any leaks? Could be a lack of fuel pressure upon initial start-up after sitting over night. You bump the engine a few times, then get pressure built up, and then it works.

1997 Toyota Corolla Long crank with cold engine normal start and operation after warm engine

hi, i would like to advice you check the electronic idle speed control valve and also check engine coolant temp sensor. The ISC (idle speed control valve) is located somewhere below the throttle valve. the engine coolant temp sensor is located near distributor. it has a two wire connection. the sensor connector is usually green

Does my2001 chev tahoe with 5.3 have a EFI cold start valve ?

No , the PCM/ ECM just turns the fuel injectors on a little longer till warm up.
The powertrain control module (PCM) reads voltages from several sensors in order to determine how much fuel to give the engine. The fuel is delivered during one of several conditions called modes. The PCM controls all modes.
?€¢
The Starting Mode--With the ignition switch in the ON position, before engaging the starter, the PCM energizes the fuel pump relay for 2 seconds allowing the fuel pump to build up pressure. The PCM first tests speed density, then switches to the mass air flow (MAF) sensor. The PCM also uses the engine coolant temperature (ECT), the throttle position (TP), and the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensors to determine the proper air/fuel ratio for starting. The PCM controls the amount of fuel delivered in the starting mode by changing the pulse width of the injectors. This is done by pulsing the injectors for very short times.

How to fix the dead moment when i hit the gas? there is always a moment that the throttle dies before the truck start to speed up !

If you haven't replaced your fuel filter recently, then do that first. If that doesn't do it, check your fuel pressure regulator.

94 Bravada that stumbles and stalls.. won't start when warm..

Try checking the exhaust flow when someone else is pushing down on the gas petal. The farther the petal gos down, the more exhaust should be coming out. I replaced my catalitic convertor at 44000 miles, it was clogged. I had them install a high flow type.

1993 suburban won't crank when hot

There are quite a few things to check, start with checking fuel and spark. One or the other isn't working at the time of NO START. Things to check: ECT sensor(engine coolant temp.), TP sensor(throttle positioning), fuel pump and relay (), spark-plugs, wires, cap&rotor, air&fuel filter, PCV, ignition control module (can be tested for free at AUTO-ZONE or most other part stores), IAC (idle control valve), no crank signal (defective ignition switch), or PROM. I think that with all the extra cranking something else is bad now. Check the battery, should have 12.5 volts (cold), the fuse, connections, and bench test the new starter, it might be defective. Hope this helps you, if you have any other questions, please ask away.

Have to hit starter 2-3 times, sometimes more before car starts - have replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, throttle control unit and idle sensor - has not cured problem - however, when unit warmed up, it...

When you say you have to "hit" the starter, do you mean literally? If so, then you need to replace your starter. I've had several cars where the starter went out and if you bang on the starter it will usually start up. That wouldn't have anything to do with your fuel pump or idle sensor. Replace your starter.
