The starter on my '94 Pathfinder suddenly developed a problem, in that, once it is hot the solenoid only clicks. wait until it cools, 1 hr +, & then starts. Changed to new rebuilt starter, new positive wire, checked ignition switch-slightly loose, replaced battery and now only clicks when key is turned to start position. Retighened everything. Any idea?
Same basic problem. Warms engine- starter clicks and takes about 20 attempts b4 starting.I do not have to wait for the engine to cool down yet. I'm sure that is coming. How can I prevent this from happening. I also just put in a new starter. Same problem!! Same basic problem. Same problem on my 1994 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 Manual Trans. I replaced my starter and the batttery, still only clicks once, then eventually starts when I try to start the car. Did you ever solve the problem? Can you give me some advice......Thanks Same problem on my 1994 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 Manual Trans. I have the exact same problem. I go to start the car, the lights go on, but it doesn't start-- just clicks. I've replaced the starter and the ignition switch. When I replaced the relay switch, it worked fine for about 10 months, but now it's doing the same thing. I've taken it to various mechanics, and they are all stumped! Other than that, the car's been perfect at 191K miles.I have the exact same problem. I go to start the car, the lights go on, but it doesn't start-- just clicks. Hi. If your 1998 Ford F-150 starts when the electrical system is cold but fails to start after driving, and you have already replaced the battery, alternator, and solenoid, there are a few additional potential causes to consider:
1. Ignition Switch: The ignition switch may be failing or experiencing heat-related issues. Over time, the switch can develop internal faults that prevent the vehicle from starting when it's hot. Consider having the ignition switch inspected and potentially replaced if necessary.
2. Starter Motor: A faulty starter motor can exhibit symptoms similar to what you're experiencing. When the starter motor gets hot, it may fail to engage and crank the engine. Consider having the starter motor tested to determine if it's functioning correctly.
3. Heat Soak: Heat soak occurs when the heat generated during engine operation affects the electrical components, particularly the starter motor. This can cause the starter motor to become temporarily inoperative until it cools down. Insulating the starter motor or installing a heat shield may help alleviate this issue.
4. Wiring and Connections: Inspect the wiring and connections associated with the starting system. Look for loose, damaged, or corroded wires, connectors, and terminals. Heat can exacerbate electrical issues, so pay particular attention to any wiring or connections that may be affected by engine heat. Repair or replace any damaged wiring or connectors as necessary.
5. Fuel Delivery Issues: While this may not directly relate to the electrical system, fuel delivery problems can cause starting issues after the engine is hot. Check the fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel injectors for any signs of malfunction. Insufficient fuel pressure or clogged components can hinder the engine's ability to start when hot.
It is advisable to have a qualified mechanic perform a thorough diagnostic check to identify the exact cause of the starting issue. They can use specialized tools and equipment to pinpoint the problem and provide appropriate repairs or replacements.
89, the dizzy loves to fail. it has a standalone dizzy until 1991. so the ECU does not make spark on 1.6L , 1.3L is carb car. the dizzy ignitor or VR devices like to fail hot. check spark with it wont start bingo , bad dizzy, next?
Most starter solenoids are on the starter. There are 2 to 3 wires going to the starter, the big one from the battery is for the starter motor it's self. The smaller one is from the ign switch to the sol. That's the one I'm guessing your having problems with. When you turn the key do you get a "click" sound or just nothing? If there is a click then your getting power from the key. And the heavy gauge wire is not delivering power to the motor. Check at battery or if they use a terminal block
Worn
contact plates in solenoid failing to provide high current to energize the
starter motor windings
?- dismantle solenoid and replace copper contact plates and plunger ring (readily
available as an inexpensive overhaul kit). Check out the manufacturer name of the starter motor (most probably DENSO) and have the replacement parts ready before continuing (Autozone?). Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. Disconnect the wires and cables to the starter motor/ solenoid assembly. Remove the two motor mounting bolts and remove the motor from the car. Remove the bolts holding the end cover from the solenoid. Undo the mount bolts holding the 'L' shaped copper contact plates Take special note of the fitting order of washers etc. Remove the plunger. Reverse the order of the steps above but substituting the parts provided in the 'service kit'. By all means clean the interior but DO NOT lubricate, it only glues dirt to everything. Wire brush any electrical unions prior to reconnecting cables etc. Job should take about 20 minutes to remove, 20 minutes to renew and 20 minutes to reinstall
providing your battery cable connections are clean and tight, it is probably the solenoid (starter) thet is worn out... but check all your connections first.
the solenoid is one unit with starter to verify you must check amperage draw at starter but it is a common symptom of what happens prior to starter replacement sorry
Sounds like the starter needs a freshen up. Solenoid should be the problem and when you jump the lugs on the start you are bypassing the solenoid .The solenoid is the little cylinder attached to the starter motor. Contacts will be stuffed. Hope this helps.
check your solenoid on your starter, usually when it get hot it fail until it cool off. a sign of starter going bad if you have to wait til the starter cool off before you can restart the car again. also check contact to the starter. if you having problems getting the starter to work you can get a small hammer and lightly tap the starter, 90% of the time it will kick over.
Check tightness of the clamps on battery & make sure the earth cable is tight from battery to engine, also check tightness of nut holding the cable 2 starter motor if all ok there its most probably the solenoid on top of starter motor replace this with new all will b ok.
