I am installing a new engine air filter on my 2008 Toyota Avalon and am having difficulty getting the air filter compartment properly seated after putting the new air filter in place. I unlocked three catches to remove the air filter compartment lid...and pushed the lid back and up to unhinge two rear hinges. But I am not sure how to properly fit the two rear hinges back together when reinstalling the lid. Please give me detailed instructions for re-installing my 2008 Toyota Avalon engine air filter compartment lid.

Toyota doesn't publish instructions for that. Its checked and installed for free as a courtesy on an oil and filter replacement, at good repair shops. You took it apart, I'm sure you can figure it out. People that aren't auto mechanics, think everything's so simple.

What is the toyota number for the cabin air

The cabin air filter is actually pretty easy to change. Here are the steps:
  1. Set the air conditioning system to Recirculation. The case for the cabin air cannot be removed with the system in the Outside Air mode.
  2. Turn the engine off.
  3. Open the Glove Compartment
  4. unclip the damper rod on the ride side of the glove compartment. To unclip it usually it is just a squeeze tab but sometimes it is a phillips head screwdriver.
  5. The glove compartment now must be squeezed together at the rear to allow the tabs to be released. Just let the glove compartment hang down.
  6. Through the glove compartment opening, locate the filter cover and remove.
  7. Remove dirty filter and replace with the new and reverse steps 1-5 to put it back together.
Shouldnt take to long usually takes me about 5 minutes to change it.

As for the toyota cabin air number im not to sure on that but you can go to any parts store and pick up an aftermarket cabin air which will save you a bit of money, same quality..

Any tools needed to change the engine air filter in a 2008 Toyota Highlander? Don't see any clips on the box...

Yes, for my 2008 3.5L Highlander, tools were required. First, make sure you get the right replacement engine air filter: there is a different part for the 3.3L and 3.5L engine. Next, as you pointed out, clips aren't used. There are two 10mm nuts that you need to loosen. They are captive (they won't fall out when you loosen them all the way). The one more in the front of the engine compartment is straightforward (once you get a 10mm socket wrench), but the one in the back is in a rather tight spot. I would suggest getting a long (6-8" shaft) 10mm nut driver. I managed to do it with a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive and some determination. Also note that there is a wiring harness clipped to the top of a sensor adjacent to the air filter compartment; unclip it after you loosen the nuts. It works a little like a phone jack (RJ11) clip or a ethernet (RJ45) clip. Once the nuts are loose and the clip is off you lift up on the large black plastic housing marked 'see owners manual for air cleaner change' or something to that effect. (By the way my owners manual covered NONE of this.) The housing will tilt up and backwards towards the middle of the engine compartment. It won't come all the way off since it is attached to a few other things. Pull out the old filter. While it is out, you may want to wipe out the bottom of the filter compartment if you see any debris.

Note carefully that one corner is a "key"; it makes sure you install the replacement in the right orientation. Look at all four corners of the replacement part; one should look a little different. Toyota helpfully marks the replacement part with UP and FRONT. My Wix replacement had no mark whatsoever. Put the "key" corner on the corner that is more towards the front of the filter compartment and on the right side. Now put the filter cover back on. Note that one of the "hinges" goes into a socket that pops off when you remove the cover. Line that up first, then line up the rest of the cover, especially where the two captive nuts are going to go. While pushing down on the filter cover, tighten the captive nuts.

Don't think there is another clip, I think it slips into a slot on the right. It should pop off.

Fuel filter location

The oil filter is in an aluminum cylinder on the engine. It is not a "spin on" filter, it is now a cartridge-type filter. When you get one, make sure that you use the new o-rings provided in the filter box. The fuel filter is in the tank. Hope this helps, the graciousness of a FixYa rating would be appreciated. Thanks.

Iat sensor

The intake air sensor is part of the Mass Air Flow sensor, located in the air tube between the air filter box and the throttle body.
