I found a small plastic cover under the alternator with a rub mark on it. Eventually it rubbed so heavy it smoked and threw the belt, leaving a hole in the plastic. Make sure it is bolted and has enough room.
Bev, The problem is with the alternator pulley. I would bet that the alternator has been replaced just before it started breaking belts. Many new replacement alternators seem to have the wrong size pulley. You can get the belt on, but they self destruct soon afterward, a very common issue with the 91-94 Capris. Either find a second hand pulley off an original junkyard alternator, or get your mechanic to research the correct pulley...
It's probably not the alternator. The problem is either the belt is being overtightened or one of the other belt-driven accessories is bad.
