I have a 1994 Mercury capri and have had the alternator replaced three times. The belt screams and then breaks. I just can't find anyone that seems to be able to figure out the problem. I need help. I love my car. Thank you Bev

I found a small plastic cover under the alternator with a rub mark on it. Eventually it rubbed so heavy it smoked and threw the belt, leaving a hole in the plastic. Make sure it is bolted and has enough room.

Bev, The problem is with the alternator pulley. I would bet that the alternator has been replaced just before it started breaking belts. Many new replacement alternators seem to have the wrong size pulley. You can get the belt on, but they self destruct soon afterward, a very common issue with the 91-94 Capris. Either find a second hand pulley off an original junkyard alternator, or get your mechanic to research the correct pulley...

It's probably not the alternator. The problem is either the belt is being overtightened or one of the other belt-driven accessories is bad.

Can I get a diagram for a removal of a alternator on a 1991 Mercury Capri XR 2 turbo

Disconnect the Red battery terminal first and then loosen the serpentine belt by moving the tensioner pulley with the correct socket to permit slack enough to dislodge the serpentine belt from any pulley such as the idler pulley or other pulley. Pay close attention of how the belt is routed prior to removing. Remove electrical connections to the alternator. Remove all alternator mounting bolts to remove the alternator. I would recommend a Haynes manual from the parts store on your vehicle. I will help you now and well into the future with all problems that may occur. Be sure you have a fully charged battery at all times as a low battery will cause the internal voltage regulator to over heat and burn up due to the need for more amperage than the alternator can generate.

I need to replace the alternator belt on my 1991 Mercury Capri

This is easiest to get to if you drive the car up on ramps and work from both underneath and above.
Remove the undercage protective shields to expose it.
Belt will cost about $10.

I have a 1993 mercury capri convertible. I have replaced the water pump and the alternator which the vbelt sits on. The alternator belt squeaks and burns and breaks when it is on tight. I loosened it up....

Most after market replacement alternators have the wrong pulley installed...the shafts are different sizes, so you cannot even use your old pulley. Best is to have the original alternator rebuilt. Alternative is to use a heavy duty industrial belt, like a Gates...not a perfect solution, but it will help...good luck...Chris

My 1994 Lexus GS300 (220,000 miles) Just stop, while driving.

It really sounds to me like you need a new alternator, but you should have the battery fully charged and checked as well. Before anyone puts an alternator in, make sure they check the belt condition and tension, this is often overlooked and may be the reason you're buying alternators all the time

I keep braking (burning off belt smokinging squealing than breaking)than go to my alternator

How long does the belt last, and is it wearing off on the edges? With the belt off I would check all the rest of your acessories for no side play and they should all turn very easily. Also what engine does your car have? Is it the 2.3L 4 cyl? Thank you for using fixya.com
