What you do is extract the entire headlight assembly. It is usually held in with 3 or 4 bolts. None of which are adjustment bolts. When the assembly is out, you have easy access to the bulbs.

Well what happens is as you select drive, it doesn't give the power signal to the solenoid that let the oil flow into first gear. If your first gear works then it is the selector you should worry about, it'd be likely contacts problem, if you are a DIY guy with a detail mind then have a go at taking the shifter off and work it make sure it selects all gears.
I assume you checked the bulbs and they were good? It's possible that the sockets have gone bad and need replacing. The tail lights are fused through the instrument panel lights. that fuse should be in the middle of your fuse box, marked "instr". If the fuse is good check to see if the dash lights come on when you turn the headlight switch on. If they don't then change the headlight switch. hope this helps.
The bar is there to hold the battery in place, there is a rod that connects to the bar, and a nut on the end of the rod. Remove the nut, then remove the bar, and then replace the battery
