I supose you are talking about the rear axle? if so, unscrew the bolts of the rear axle's cover and let the oil flow out into a container. once it's empty, clean the cover and the surface on the axle where the cover goes on to, apply a seal onto the cover and put the cover back on and screw al of the bolts back into place and tighten them. you will find a rubber plug in the cover, take it out and fill the rear axle untill the liquid comes out of the plughole. Put the rubber plug in and you're done! Watch out if you got al limited slip differential, you will need to put an additive into the oil so you won't burn the clutches of you limited slip differential.

SOURCE: 2001 dodge ram 1500 4x4 vent hose on rear axel

The hose is only an extension to elevate the vent. Trucks have these so they can be braver about crossing axle deep water.. The plastic piece on the end is somewhat of a chk valve so the hose isn't open to dirt and road spray. It should be cliped to the frame to stay elevated.

SOURCE: i have a dodge ram 1500 4x4 quadcab the rear end

The problem is almost always caused by the clips that hold the clutch disc in place on the po-si rear-ends.The clip will come lose and catch between the carrier clamp and cause metal parts to be deposited in the housing causing the front and rear pinion bearing to wear. Howling while accelerating is the rear pinion bearing. Howling while decelerating is the front pinion bearing. Sometimes you can get by with just replacing the clips and pinion bearings. Clips can be ordered out of California. For around $70.00 .The dealer will want to sell the entire assembly. Which does not include the pinion and bearings. The longer you go the more damage that will be done. If you can't do this yourself. No one is going to repair just part of the assembly and warranty.

2003 dodge ram 1500 4x4,vibration rear wheels ,when taking off in a slow turn, something in the rear end ,its not the brakes, something with the pinion gear i think, how do i fix it

Check your u-joints first. If it is not the u-joint, then it is probably the yoke. Take the driveshaft off/out and on the yoke you will see a nut, make sure that it is tight. You will want to drain and refill your rear end gear oil as well.

Rear end noise on 2002 Dodge ram 1500

If you have a positraction differential, you need posi additive along with the new lube. After it's in, take it to a parking lot and make tight left turns then tight right turns to get the lube between the posi plates. That usually frees it up unless there is an actual mechanical problem in the diff.
good luck!
