Depending on the trouble codes, it may be the ECM. (computer)
You can have the car scanned for codes or attempt it yourself.
The "set timing mode" is the section of the computer program that you access to change the base timing. It should not show up on the display unless you access it.

sorry i have absolutely no idea here ,only sugesstion i can perhaps make is to disconnect the battery and then join the ends together and leave overnight and see if you discharge the capacitors so the ECU loses its memory .

You start with the radio off then press the set button. You may have to hold it. Use the scan and seek buttons to set time.

There is no way to adjust the timing on your car....if you suspect or have verified that the timing is off, then either something is wrong with the computer, or something has gone wrong mechanically. Fixing a timing issue is not a job advise of the at home mechanic as the Northstar engine is very complex and requires many specialized tools for its repairs.

First make sure timing marks on crank and timing gear are pointing towards each other and in alignment. Next make sure that the camshaft gear pins are pointing down and at 90 degrees to heads. Put chains back on. Thats it. Make sure all the marks are exactly like I wrote or you will be tearing the motor back apart and doing it again.

use only platium plugs they are pre set and will perform better. but if you just have to use standard plugs it is 50 thousands.
