My 2000 jag s type 4.0 auto seems to have a engine problem, it overheats and the fan does not come on, it's ok on fast roads but going up hill or inthe city the temp reaches to the red? Any help would be great ian.

Time to replace eather temperture sending unit to the fan or the fan itself do not keep running the engine hot you could camage the head Gasket get this fixwd soon

if it has a viscous fan hub( fan clutch ) check it for correct operation
what you describe indicates that the fan is not travelling as fast as it should to be pulling air through the radiator
other indications are temp rising at stop lights , temp rising in slow moving traffic or in your case loaded ( going up hill)with higher engine rpm
Check voltage at fan motor, sounds like fan motor has had it, that's why it was spinning slow, kinds like a starter, won't work as fast when starting to go out or not work at all, if you have voltage, replace it.
Had this problem on a v6 3l petrol. No codes present.Connected laptop to diagnostics and drove jag for a few miles.Found fuel pressure to start off at over 55 psi but slowly drop to 20 psi and less until car came to a halt.
Waited a couple of minutes hey presto car starts,pressure back to over 55psi running fine for a while.tested power supply to fuel pump,ok at constant 12 volt. Changed inline fuel regulator and fuel filter,still the same.Checked fuel tank for any possibility of a vacuum occurring,no not that either.Had to bite the bullet and change the in tank fuel pump,problem solved runs fine.This car had also been to jags and because no fault code appeared it must be alright! I have learnt that over my forty year mechanical experience that common sense basics must also be checked out and not totally depend on computer fault codes.Hope this helps.bw Johnnyman.
If you have seen the signs of leakage around the water pump thn its worth replacing it being that far already.
Its better too, to flush the radiator.
Usually if the seal blows thts the end of the pump even if it looks ok!
Check all your fuses first as it sounds like you shorted something out, did you turn the jag off before connecting the jump leads, if you did you will be ok but if you did not it is more than likely a fuse.

Its overheating when you go up long hills because the engine is not getting adaquete air in the system. The radiator is angled to get optimal air a certain way. It may overheat but you shouldn't start seeing smoke.
