Probably you need rest this warning light; check this procedure...

Chevrolet Suburban -
2000-01
GMC Yukon XL, Chevrolet Silverado,GMC Trucks Sierra - 1999-00

Turn the ignition key to the RUN position. Fully push and release the accelerator pedal 3 times within 5 seconds. If the CHANGE OIL SOON light flashes 2 times, the system is reset. However, if the light comes on and stays on for 5 seconds, the system did not reset. Repeat the procedure if the system does not reset.

Tell us news.

This is a typical problem with these trucks and the GMC's as well. Don't
bother taking it to get looked at. They will probably tell you a bunch
of things they think is wrong with it. I did alot of internet research
on this and bought the factory manuals with the service bulletins, and
even though alot of people said it was the $400.00 to $600.00 (just
parts) switching unit at the transfer case. It took $60.00 and 20 mins.
    to fix it.

The first thing i would check is the 4x4 selector switch. I know for a
fact that these will throw a service 4x4 code if they are unplugged or
shorted. They sell for 50-60$ or you may find one at a local salvage
    yard for cheaper.
Taking this out and checking it only takes a few seconds, just simply
pop the switch out of the dash with the edge of your pocket knife.
After you get it out theres a few more tabs surrounding the back plate,
and this is where the circuit board is located. I would inspect it
visually to make sure nothing looks corroded and also take a sniff of it
to insure there isn't a burnt smell.
If it were the 4x4 actuator the lights would still illuminate on the
selector switch, it just wouldn't engage the 4x4.

This light is truned on due to a problem with the engagement motor of the transfer case, either the motor has stopped working or the contacts that sense when the case is engaged are burnt, u will need to replace the the electric transfer case actuator in most cases to repair this problem

It would need to be reset. Usually the rreset button is on the fuse box and held in for 15 seconds with the key switched to the on position

  • Robert J Garcia Jun 16, 2010

My truck has two fuse boxes one under the hood and one on the driver side inside at the

end of the dash and neither one has a reset button

Take it by Auto Zone and let them read the code when the service light is on. They do it for free.

Service 4WD light is on

2005 z71 Silverado v-8 4X4 not working.
Case History 07 09 13
Problem started with service 4wDrive message. It would come and go. Got worse as time went on. Then it got to All switch lights would only come on 3 seconds when key turned on and again when started for 3 seconds. Then no 4X4 and no lights. Researched on internet and noted problem was often solver by replacing control switch due to bad solder joints. Ordered new switch. Changed out with no change. Replaced old switch.
Went to AutoZone and checked codes. Had 4 codes B2725, B0790 (both Cleared) and Codes C0327 & C0040 (Both would not clear)
Next I decided before taking to the shop to try cleaning the contacts although I thought I was probably wasting my time. Went to radio shack and bought electronic contact cleaner spray.($9.98). Pulled 30 amp fuse under hood and raised vehicle. Disconnected plug on transfer case and sprayed contacts on both plugs(male & female). Thoroughly dried with compressed air and plugged back in. Just knew this wasn't going to fix it. Also sprayed both plugs on both sides of transfer case(Rear) (2 speed sensors I think). Anyway to make a long story short started up truck and all was normal:o) Every thing work fine and all lights and all modes work correctly. Hope you have this easy of fix to cure your 4X4 problem. "Service 4WD" dash light comes

Sounds like a defective electronic shift motor for the transfer case. The diff and t-case fluids should be replaced every 30K but will never turn on serv 4wd light.

I have a 2004 GMC Envoy XL and the high range 4x4 mode will not engage. The AWD system works just fine as well as the 4x4 mode in low gear. What is causing this?

Is the Service 4WD light coming on? Do the light on the 4x4 selector switch indicate the proper selection and are on steady after a few seconds? If there is no Service 4WD light on and the selector switch light are correct, the only place for the problem to be is the Transfer Case. Has the Transfer Case fluid been changed at 50K mile intervals? This is very important.

Service light keeps coming 4x4 work fineand there are no leaks and i have alwayschanged oil as required in transfer case 1999 chev silverado 1500 5.3 engine

This is good that you have done this, but it does not mean there is no problem, have the auto zone read the codes stored in the computer. It can be just a o2 sensor, but have it checked to correct the problem.

2007 Tahoe with 30K and the 4 wheel service light keeps coming on

there could be the issue that the fluid is a break in type fluid used right from the factory which needs replacement. there are 5 TSB'S for the transaxle... let me know if you have any problem with it. basically even tho you don't turn on to 4 X 4 the parts are still spinning as you drive.

01 chevy silverado4x4 transfewr case

Changing the Fluid would help But, It will not solve the Problem. It sounds like you may have a Broken tooth on a Gear inside the Transfer Case. The only real way to fix this is to Take the Transfer Case off and check the Gears and Electronics. Maybe even get it Overhauled.

96 chevy tahoe, transfer case making noise such as chain slipping

Fluid Should Be Checked Just The Same As Engine Oil. Should Be Changed At Least Once A Year For Proper Service & Reliability. Should be Driven 10 Miles A Month In 4 Hi To Keep Lubricated. I Drive A 1975 Chevy K10 PKP FullTime 4X4 NP203 & A 1980 GMC Jimmy Lock-Outs 4X4 NP205, And I Drive Them Once A Month At 55 MPH For 10 Miles (On Pavement). Keeps The System Lubed Up & Moving. Have Done This For The Last 15 Years I Have Owned Them. KEEP THEM SERVICED. Low Oil Is A Transfer Case Killer. Also Put The Correct Type Of Fluid In, Each Transfer Case Takes A Different Type Of Fluid, Call Dealer Shop For Correct Fluid Type. Some Take Dextron III Or 10-40 Engine Oil Depends On Transfer Case.
