C Clips you mean. there is a pin in the middle of the ring gear. this pin must be removed and then you push in on each axle, then the clip may fall out, or you will need to remove it from the end of the axle. then you can pull the axle out. You dont say "why" you are replacing it, replace the axle bearing and seal.

Rear axle removal on a 2004 f150 fx4

First thing is to make sure you chock the front tires so the truck will not roll. Raise the rear end and set it on jack stands. Put the transmission in Neutral and make sure the parking brake is off. Remove the rear tires and disassemble the brakes on the side with the leaking seal. Place a drain pan under the rear differential and remove the cover. Remove the differential shaft lock bolt. You will need to turn the drive shaft by hand to access the bolt. It will be on the right side off the spider gear housing. Only use a 5/16 or 8mm 6 point box end wrench to remove the bolt. After you remove the bolt reach on the top of the spider gear housing and push the differential lock shaft down to remove it. Make sure the spider gears do not rotate after you remove the shaft. If they do you will need to realign everything to reinstall the lock shaft. Push the axle shaft in enough to remove the "C" clip from the tip of it. The axle will now slide out of the rear end. You can use the tip of the axle shaft to remove the axle seal. If you're changing the bearing as well you will need a slide hammer with axle bearing adapters to remove it. You can use a socket and hammer to install the new bearing and seal. Be careful not to damage the bearing and seal. I recommend packing grease in the back side of the seal. This helps prevent the spring on the seal lip from coming off. Assembly is the reverse. Clean off all the gear oil from the differential cover and the axle. You can use RTV as a gasket if the OEM gasket is damaged. Fill the rear end with new gear oil of the proper type. Refer to your owner's manual.

How do you change the passenger side abs sensor on a 97 jeep grand cherokee. I have a new sensor and would like to know what all has to be taken apart to replace it on the rear wheel.

HI!!

The only things you have to take off is the tire and the brake drum, which comes off just by pulling it off, it may need a some effort, if too tight, hit it a couple of times with a hammer, (not too hard) to loosen it up.

The sensor is bolted to the backing plate in front of a toothed wheel which is part of the axle shaft, right behind the wheel studs.

Note the position of old sensor and install new one in same place.

How do you take apart the pasnager rear axle?

You need to remove the rear wheel and brake drum, support the axle housing with a good jackstand. Remove the rear diff cover and find the bolt that goes through one end of the spider gear shaft (smaller gears in center section) Be careful when removing shaft or turning gears that the small gears don't walk out of the housing. Once the shaft has been removed, push the axle in and remove the retaining clip on the inside end, then pull axle out. Reverse procedure to install.

Can the gears be changed from 4.11 to 3.7 w/o changing rear end?

Yes, you can leave the axle housing installed, but you will have to pull the axle shafts. You will likely have to purchase a specialty tool to do this.

(If you have the massive drums found on the 3500s and some 2500's, this would also be a good time to re-grease your bearings and check your rear brake shoes and change them if worn beyond 50%, since you will have the axle ends taken apart. These drums are very heavy. Do not remove the trapped bearing from the drum.)

To go from 4:11 to 3:73, You only need to swap out the gears in the differential (including the pinion gear) Be sure to check for proper alignment and backlash. Re-install axle shafts. Replace, do not reuse any seals. You may also need to reprogram the trucks shift points for the new gear ratio to maximize efficiency results.

Note: By changing your gear ratio to 3:73 You may potentially decrease your trucks Towing/Hauling weight capacity. Many GM trucks are equipped with an Eaton mechanically locking rear (RPO code: G80). You can find out if yours is so equipped, by checking the label inside the glove box. Personally I prefer the G80.

(I have the 3:73s in My '97 C2500 and average around 10.5MPG city, but long freeway runs can hit 15+MPG. My GVW is 8600LBS, and 10,000LBS Towing capacity. "Stop & Go" driving is your worst enemy with these trucks.)

Consider if all the work involved is worth it in performance gains before going forward.

Rear axle leaking

Block the front tires. Break the rear lugs loose. Jack up the rear of the truck at the center if possible. remove the wheels & brake drums. Remove the brake shoes, return springs & all the other hardware. Remove the differential cover & drain oil. If you have a posi the next step sucks. You need to remove the threaded pin from the housing & remove the axle retaining clips. All the while, being carefull of the spring in the posi unit. If no posi, then same procedure, minus the "pucker factor". After the axle is out, take a large flat blade screw driver or pry bar & pop the seal out. Keep in mind the axle bearing is probably gone too , so that's another procedure. Keep it apart, you'll be glad you did.

Bent right rear RH axle 2001 prerunner 2wd.

Hello, and welcome to FixYa. Let me assist you as follows:
Removing the rear axle shaft is realy quite easy.
Her is what you need to do:

Remove the wheel/tire.
Remove the rear brake drum.
Remove the brake line to the rear wheel cylinder and plug the line.
Remove the park brake cable.
Remove the entire rear backing plate assembly; no need to remove the rear shoes.
When the backing plate is off, the axle shaft slides out of the axle housing; there are no "C" clips to remove, like on a Chevrolet. The axle is not held at the differential in any fashion.
Note that if you replace the axle shaft, you will need a machine shop to press the wheel bearings & seals onto the new shaft.

If you have any further questions; please feel free to respond.

Thanks for choosing FixYa for assistance; the graciousness of a FixYa rating for my instructions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
