your model car has a electronic speedometer transducer, what it does measures rotation speed of the transaxle final drive and converts the information into an electronic signal which send to the speedometor module in the instrument panel, chilton is right my friend.yep ecu could be the problem because ecu uses the signal or input from the electronic speedometer transducer.
If the vehicle speed sensor was the cause you would have a check engine light and the transmission would have sifting issues into overdrive, I would think you just have a failing tachometer stepper motor (tiny DC motor) that drives the needle..
Glow plugs are a lot like spark plugs and change much the same way. There not cheap so just make sure that is your problems as the controller can also fail. especially if the all went down at once.
Easy to buy, difficult to replace as it is in a very awkward place on the top of the end of the transmission near the right drive axle location. Requires a hoist and the need to disconnect a few things to get at it.
You need to find out if your speedometer is cable driven or electronic.
If it is cable driven there will be a cable running from your
transmission to the back of the speedometer. Sometimes the cables lose
their lubrication and break. Usually pretty cheap to replace.
If your speedometer is electronic there is a sensor on your
transmission that sends a signal to your speedometer. Either your
sensor (called a Vehicle Speed Sensor or VSS) went bad or your
speedometer quit working. The sensors are usually inexpensive....the
speedometers are NOT! Last one I needed I bought off eBay and purchased
one with the lowest miles I could find. If you ever sell the car you
have to mark the title that the speedometer is not correct. I usually
keep the old speedometer around along with a record of the mileage of
the replacement so I can always figure out the cars true mileage if I
need to.
