2003 olds aurora charging system low volts

I would say that you have two problems, 1st is most likely a loose belt for your power steering, and 2nd your light problem could be an alternator, not putting out enough charge, should be putting out around 13.6 volts at all times, I'd give these a try Dave.

the low charge # @ gauge could be caused by bad ground or high resistence in the wireing harness. Don't think it has anything to do with your 4x shifting prob I would check 4x switch and electric motor on transfere case.

Put a volt meter across the battery and if it reads less than 13 volts then it has a problem. The system should be 13.5-14.5dc..... 15 volt max. If it reads low only that idle, the engine may be idling to low, the regulator is bad, the belt is slipping, or the system has to great a load on it while idling(to many lights and electronics). If it comes up over 13.5volts when the engine is revved up then the regulator/slipping belt/ or load is most likely the problem. If it does not come up to the voltages listed above then the regulator/alternator are faulty.

The battery light is indicating a malfunction in the charging system. Put a meter on the batter an check for 12.0 volts with the engine off. Next check for 13.7 to 15.1 volts with the engine running.
It is likely the alternator or regulator needs to be replaced.

I would say that the battery is low from sitting. Some alarm systems have a low voltage indicator that sets off the alarm. The flashing lights and clicking (alarm module) under the dash are indicative of just such a problem. Have the battery charged and consider disconnecting it or you can purchase a solar charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter to keep the battery charged (usually under $30 @ Lowes). However if you remove the battery is may you to lose radio codes etc... I believe the solar charger is the best option at this point. Have someone give it a boost with jumper cables or a charger to stop the flashing and clicking in the interim. Thanks for using Fixya and please post a comment and rate my assistance.

have a battery load tested
battery should be 12.5-13.5 volts at rest and no lower than 11 volts while cranking
next have an auto electrician to a charging system check
check that the drive belt is in good condition and tensioned properly

Put a voltmeter on the battery. With engine off you should read 12.0 volts. Engine running you should read between 13.7 volts and 15.1 volts. Problem could be Battery, Alternator or Regulator.

Its probably the alternator. It will need to be tested on the vehicle with the engine running and the light illuminated. Measure the battery voltage with the engine running. It should be at least 13.5 volts. If it is lower have the alternator tested at a shop with a charging system tester.

Usually its your alternator, the light comes on when your charge voltages drops below a certain level.
