If you overboost , there is a sensor that shuts off ingition spark to keep you from breaking your engine.
Have you modified the turbo in some way that would have caused an increase in boost ?

Check for crushed/shorted wires.

I've got an 85 supra, blew engine in it. picked up an 87 supra w/55k mi. junker. how much of these cars are interchangeable? i want to swap everything i can.!

Most of the parts are interchangeable since during this period there were no major changes made to this model. It was upgraded in 85 and the next modified model was made in 88. so its pretty much the same model & since you have blown the engine, anything else that you want to swap, can be done easily

What feeds the boost gauge? On my 87 Supra Turbo, my boost gauge isn't working properly. Is it vacuum operated? Or are it's readings supplied by the MAF or MAP?

The boost gauge is fed by the Turbo. It tells you how much extra air the turbo is putting into your engine. This is turbo ONLY. Usually a little plastic line from the turbo to the gauge.

I want more boost out of my stock 87 Supra Turbo. Not to sound totally clueless, but is there some kind of adjuster on the turbo to turn up? I'm just now leaving the world of carburetors.

hey mate,

You can get a aftermarket part for your car called a boost controller there are many different types manual and electric, if you go to your local car parts store and ask for a boost controller there is a type called a bleed valve which works by restricting boost to your actuator which controlls the wastegate causing it to open slower than it usually would therefore creating more horsepower... * BE CAREFUL THO AS STANDARD ENGINES, ESPECIALLY OLDER ONES CANNOT HANDLE MUCH MORE HP THAN THE FACTORY SETTINGS *

Mk3 Supra Turbo Boost Gauge Problems

The gauge is working fine, the turbo will not kick in untill the engine is spinning fast enough, as the turbo is propelled by exaughst from the engine. So, you can drive around normal and never use the turbo, and climb in the gas and spool the turbo up, what you are noticing is called turbo lag, which is the biggest down fall when compaired to superchargers!

My son has a 88 toyota supra with a tront end

camp5tn1: yes, the front wheel bearing is one large bearing which must be pressed out. "O"Reilley's and number of other automotive parts house will do this pretty cheap. It's not worth the hassle unless you have the proper tools. Just remove the whole steering knuckle with the bearing in it, minus the axle and carry it down to them.
