You need a timing light to do this.
The 2.6 liter Isuzu engine timing specs say set to 12 degrees BTDC @ 900 rpms. **Make sure your engine is warmed up when you are checking and/or adjusting the timing.**
Take a piece of chalk and search for and then mark the notch on your crank pulley (bottom most pulley).
Also mark the 12 degree spot on the numbered timing tag right next to the pulley.
Connect your timing light power terminals to your battery.
Then connect the timing light's timing lead to the number 1 cylinder spark plug wire. The number 1 cylinder is the one closest to the front of the car. Find the plug wire going to this spark plug and connect your timing light lead to this plug wire.
**Pay special care to prevent these wires from becoming entangled in your running engine, when the time comes to run the engine.**
If timing needs to be adjusted, you will adjust it by turning the distributor (by hand) when the engine is running. But first check the timing marks without loosening the distributor hold down bolt, in case it does not need adjusting.
**When you squeeze the timing gun trigger, it will light; and when this happens it is telling you that at that instant the number 1 cylinder has fired.
Your timing is set correctly if, when you squeeze the timing gun trigger, engine running, aimed at bottom pulley area (your chalk marks), the timing marks you highlighted with chalk are aligned when the gun light flashes. If they are not aligned precisely, you can align them by turning the distributor-do this when engine is running, still checking the timing flashes.
**If the timing marks are sporadic and very difficult to align, it means that there is slack in the timing chain/belt and this should be remedied.**
***ALSO***
It is critical when checking timing that you disconnect the VSV (vacuum switching valve). You should refer to your vacuum hose routing chart on your vehicle to locate yours. Sometimes they are labeled on the actual part. Usually they are connected by hoses to the EGR valve.
Hope this helps.
